INTRODUCTION<br />
The application <strong>of</strong> the National Register criteria is not always an easy<br />
task. The role <strong>of</strong> the historian is to gather information that is specific,<br />
factual, objective <strong>and</strong> comprehensive. Although the National Register criteria<br />
are broad, general <strong>and</strong> allo~ latitude in the specific application, the<br />
interpretation <strong>of</strong> a site or structure <strong>and</strong> its significance remains<br />
objective,<br />
subjective <strong>and</strong> open to further tnterpretati on.<br />
The task was to fill in another page in Alaska's history; the result is a<br />
history <strong>of</strong> a specific site where people built homes, raised families, conducted<br />
business <strong>and</strong> lived out thei r lives. The structures, photographs, records <strong>and</strong><br />
oral histories comprise the only remaining evidence <strong>of</strong> earlier times.<br />
Historical perspective guided the survey's development <strong>and</strong> shaping <strong>of</strong> its<br />
findings.<br />
