PROJECT METHODOLOGY<br />
Alaska Archives Resource <strong>and</strong> Records Management performed a number <strong>of</strong> tasks<br />
during the survey to create a data base, document the site <strong>and</strong> structures, <strong>and</strong><br />
apply the' National Register criteria. The survey results, with an<br />
interpretation <strong>of</strong> its historical, architectural <strong>and</strong> archaeological significance,<br />
are included in the final' report.<br />
TASKS PERFORMED<br />
(1) Interviews were held with study area property owners <strong>and</strong> residents,<br />
historians, anthropologists, archaeologists <strong>and</strong> long-time <strong>Juneau</strong><br />
residents.<br />
(2) Structure ~acades were photographed <strong>and</strong> a photo log created. Historic<br />
photographs were obtained from individual collections, the Alaska<br />
Historical Library, <strong>and</strong> the State Archives <strong>and</strong> Records Center. An<br />
architectural description was developed for each structure <strong>and</strong> used<br />
with the photographs for evaluation.<br />
(3) Assessment <strong>and</strong> Tax Rolls, <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Juneau</strong> (1901-1951, 1965-1983), were<br />
reviewed for property ownership <strong>and</strong> improvements. The District<br />
Recorder records conta i ned the early transfer <strong>of</strong> properti es <strong>and</strong> lot<br />
location claims beginning in 1881. Using block <strong>and</strong> lot numbers, each<br />
iurveyed unit on Telephone Hill was researched throughout its recorded<br />
history <strong>and</strong> a data base created <strong>of</strong> ownership <strong>and</strong> improvement values.<br />
(4) The Curry-Weissbrodt Collection, which documents the l<strong>and</strong> claims <strong>of</strong><br />
Alaska's Tlingit <strong>and</strong> Haida Indian Tribes <strong>and</strong> is located in the Sealaska<br />
