Alumni connections and events Alumni in Hong Kong The Chancellor, Sir Crispin Tickell, and Pamela Cross, Director of the International Office, met with nearly 60 Kent alumni in Hong Kong in December. Kent Law Clinic Anniversary Dinner The Kent Law Clinic recently celebrated 30 years since the foundation of a clinic in the Law School and ten years of the present Kent Law Clinic. Originally established in 1973 and the first in the UK, the Law Clinic is a free legal advice and representation agency run by staff and students, with local volunteer solicitors and barristers. It is the main vehicle for clinical legal education in KLS, enabling students to learn through supervised participation in conducting real cases, and to provide a valuable service to members of the public. The present Law Clinic has been in operation since 1993, and in the last ten years Clinic students have helped clients, through litigation and negotiation, obtain over £500,000. A good service is also provided where no compensation is recovered, and in the many areas (eg security of tenure, immigration, family matters) where compensation is not the issue. The Clinic also assists local groups and organisations (including a local church, voluntary sector agencies, community groups) with constitutional, leasing and organisational matters. Careers Fair This year on 4 March, over 60 graduates met up over lunch, and then spent the afternoon talking to students about their careers. The campus was buzzing with the last day of the Student’s Union elections, but a good number of students did visit the Fair to seek advice and tips on ‘life after Kent’. Cathedral Concert The annual Colyer-Fergusson Concert, this year featuring the combined forces of the University of Kent Music Society Chorus and Symphony Orchestra in Canterbury Cathedral’s magnificent Nave, took place on 13 March. The programme was Elgar’s extraordinary arrangement of the ‘Overture’ to Handel’s second ‘Chandos Anthem’, followed by the ‘Enigma Variations’, with its overwhelming ‘Nimrod’ movement. The two-hundredstrong University Chorus then joined forces with the orchestra and soloists to perform Beethoven’s Mass in C. Director of Music Susan Wanless conducted the choir and orchestra (made up of students, staff and some alumni) and outstanding soloists Catherine Mikic, Susan Legg, Andrew Mackenzie-Wicks and Colin Campbell. Duel personalities Thanks to an idea from Andrew Courtney K93, who was, during his time at Kent, the Fencing Club Social Secretary, President and Men’s Captain, alumni fencers have, since March 1999, come together for a weekend of informal fencing with current students and fencing alumni.
