A BURMESE WONDERLAND. 183<br />

As<br />

soldiers, the <strong>Burmese</strong> have plenty <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiative<br />

<strong>and</strong> readily develop powers <strong>of</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>. They have a<br />

proper pride <strong>of</strong> race, an <strong>in</strong>tense love for their country,<br />

<strong>and</strong> are not given to ap<strong>in</strong>g foreign ways <strong>and</strong> dress.<br />

A Prussian discipl<strong>in</strong>e which ignores <strong>in</strong>dividuality is as<br />

is why such totally divergent op<strong>in</strong>ions are held about<br />

It is obvious that a people so wayward <strong>and</strong> highspirited<br />

require special h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g, but well repay the<br />

trouble <strong>of</strong> cultivat<strong>in</strong>g. That has been our experience<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Army. As the imperative necessity <strong>of</strong> rout<strong>in</strong>e
