A <strong>Burmese</strong> Enchantment.— " One <strong>of</strong> the most attractive<br />

features <strong>of</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong> Enriquez's book on Buima<br />

is the genu<strong>in</strong>e pleasure he takes <strong>in</strong> the country <strong>and</strong><br />

its people. Books have been written <strong>of</strong> Burma<br />

which have struck the note <strong>of</strong> romantic attractiveness,<br />

but which leave a suspicion that romance was<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced more as a pay<strong>in</strong>g proposition than as a<br />

real quality <strong>of</strong> the country. There is no question<br />

<strong>of</strong> that with a book by Capta<strong>in</strong> Enriquez. He<br />

has Uved <strong>in</strong> the country for many years, <strong>and</strong> has<br />

made a first<br />

h<strong>and</strong> study <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> which he writes.<br />

It is impossible for the reader not to be conv<strong>in</strong>ced<br />

that the author has found a deep attraction <strong>in</strong><br />

Burma, a conviction which is susta<strong>in</strong>ed by the<br />

matter <strong>of</strong> fact <strong>and</strong> humorous way <strong>in</strong> which most<br />

<strong>of</strong> the descriptions are given His powers<br />

<strong>of</strong> concise description are considerable<br />

Graphic touches are numerous The<br />

author has picked up many qua<strong>in</strong>t <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g items <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation. His sympathy<br />

extends to the wild life <strong>of</strong> nature, <strong>and</strong> he has some<br />

lively <strong>and</strong> engag<strong>in</strong>g passages on this topic<br />

The illustrations are photographs taken by himself<br />

<strong>and</strong> are well chosen.<br />
