44 A BURMESE WONDERLAND.<br />
with uneven, slippery floors. Water dripped from the<br />
ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong> many places, <strong>and</strong> I have never before seen such<br />
wonderful stalactites <strong>and</strong> stalagmites <strong>in</strong> all stages <strong>of</strong><br />
development. Some hed jo<strong>in</strong>ed up form<strong>in</strong>g pillars, or<br />
resembl<strong>in</strong>g trees <strong>and</strong> foliage. Others aga<strong>in</strong> seemed to<br />
pour from the ro<strong>of</strong> Uke gigantic petrified cataracts,<br />
which <strong>in</strong>deed they were.<br />
St<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g water t«nds to form<br />
deposits along its edges, creat<strong>in</strong>g thereby terraces <strong>of</strong><br />
shallow water ris<strong>in</strong>g one above the other, <strong>and</strong> each<br />
conta<strong>in</strong>ed by a wavy wall <strong>of</strong> rock about 6 <strong>in</strong>ches high.<br />
This is a very peculiar formation.<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g to legend, these caverns were the home<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Embryo Buddha <strong>in</strong> his <strong>in</strong>carnation as Saddan<br />
Hs<strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong>, the Elephant K<strong>in</strong>g<br />
;<br />
<strong>and</strong> the caves are known<br />
as Saddan Hs<strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong> Ku. The fable is well known <strong>in</strong><br />
Burma, <strong>and</strong> relates that one day the Elephant K<strong>in</strong>g<br />
gave a flower to his wife Sula-thu-patti. There was a<br />
bee <strong>in</strong> the flower which stung her, <strong>and</strong> she cried fretfully<br />
to her lord " I'll score <strong>of</strong>f you." In a future life she<br />
was reborn a pr<strong>in</strong>cess, <strong>and</strong> desir<strong>in</strong>g an ivory ornament<br />
she sent out a hunter who approached the Elephant<br />
K<strong>in</strong>g but was caught by him. Hear<strong>in</strong>g what the hunter<br />
wanted, <strong>and</strong> by whom he was sent, the Elephant K<strong>in</strong>g<br />
tried to saw <strong>of</strong>f the tip <strong>of</strong> his tusk. Fail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> that, he<br />
sent the whole tusk, <strong>and</strong> the Pr<strong>in</strong>cess, recogniz<strong>in</strong>g it<br />
as that <strong>of</strong> her lord <strong>in</strong> her elephant life, grieved to death<br />
when she recalled those pettish words ' I'll score <strong>of</strong>f you '<br />
which she had used <strong>in</strong> a former existence.<br />
Needless to say<br />
many a stalactite <strong>in</strong> these caves suggests some part <strong>of</strong>
