A BURMESE WONDERLAND. 3<br />

<strong>and</strong> follow dusty roads, <strong>and</strong> reach those remote <strong>and</strong><br />

holy shr<strong>in</strong>es which are dearest to the heart <strong>of</strong> the people.<br />

Here, <strong>in</strong>deed, we shall f<strong>in</strong>d a Wonderl<strong>and</strong> which will<br />

charm <strong>and</strong> bewitch us with its<br />

allurements.<br />

In <strong>Lower</strong> Burma we have to deal with a confused<br />

population. The country was orig<strong>in</strong>ally Tak<strong>in</strong>g, but<br />

Tak<strong>in</strong>gs have now almost disappeared. Tak<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

<strong>Burmese</strong>, Karens, Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>and</strong> Arakanese have been<br />
