A BURMESE WONDERLAND.<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>e the ground carefully with a torch for possible<br />

reptiles. On enter<strong>in</strong>g, one is immediately impressed<br />

with the perfect ventilation which ensures<br />

<strong>of</strong> fresh air.<br />

a free passage<br />

The central chamber is ro<strong>of</strong>ed with very f<strong>in</strong>e bricks.<br />

A colossal Buddha is seated on the throne. The<br />

exterior <strong>of</strong> this remarkable build<strong>in</strong>g is now a shapeless<br />

mass <strong>of</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>. It was once covered with Buddha images<br />

from which the shr<strong>in</strong>e derived its name. S<strong>in</strong>ce this<br />

monument is subject to 250 <strong>in</strong>ches <strong>of</strong> ra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> some<br />

years, it is not surpris<strong>in</strong>g that, after all these centuries,<br />

water has penetrated. Many <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terior carv<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

are badly water-worn. In the vic<strong>in</strong>ity is an <strong>in</strong>scribed<br />

pillar : also a soUd stone stupa <strong>in</strong> which M<strong>in</strong> Ba,<br />

the royal founder <strong>of</strong> this unique pagoda, is buried.<br />

So far, noth<strong>in</strong>g has been done to preserve any <strong>of</strong><br />

the shr<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> this type. Their conservation is <strong>in</strong>deed<br />

beyond the f<strong>in</strong>ancial capacity <strong>of</strong> villagers, <strong>and</strong> steps are<br />

now be<strong>in</strong>g taken to prepare proper estimates. The<br />

uproot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> jungle growth, <strong>and</strong> the thorough<br />

cement<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> the exterior, would greatly prolong the life <strong>of</strong> these<br />

monuments. The Dukhan The<strong>in</strong>, or '' Shr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> Sorrow,"<br />

is also a fortified pagcda similar <strong>in</strong> type to those already<br />

mentioned, yet sufficiently different to merit separate<br />

description.<br />

The slope <strong>of</strong> the outer walls, <strong>and</strong> the loopholes<br />

with which they are provided, denote pla<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

the defensive nature <strong>of</strong> the pagoda, which was, <strong>in</strong> fact,<br />

a refuge for monks, just as the Shittaung was a refuge
