20 A BURMESE WONDERLAND.<br />

At the same time, though the Indians <strong>of</strong> those days<br />

dispensed un<strong>in</strong>tentional bless<strong>in</strong>gs upon the peoples <strong>of</strong><br />

Burma, they were a serious menace. H<strong>in</strong>duism triumphed<br />

over Buddhism <strong>in</strong> Cambcdia, though the Tak<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

successfully resisted this <strong>in</strong>fluence. There resulted also<br />

considerable mix<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> blood, <strong>and</strong> some confusion as to<br />

the true orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Tak<strong>in</strong>gs : <strong>and</strong> there still survive<br />

all sorts <strong>of</strong> conflict<strong>in</strong>g legends which obscure their real<br />

Mongolian orig<strong>in</strong>. Mon is the true national name, <strong>and</strong><br />

Tala<strong>in</strong>g is merely a foreign appellation referr<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

Indian stra<strong>in</strong> which, by long association, has entered<br />

<strong>in</strong>to their composition. Tala<strong>in</strong>g is derived from Tal<strong>in</strong>gana,<br />

a country still shown on <strong>Burmese</strong> maps <strong>of</strong> India<br />

to the south <strong>of</strong> the river Gcdavari^<br />

It was very likely the growth <strong>and</strong> aggression <strong>of</strong><br />

Indian Colonies that <strong>in</strong>duced Anawratta's descent on<br />

<strong>Lower</strong> Burma <strong>in</strong> 1057 A.D. He drove ' the Kalas <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the sea ' : <strong>and</strong> the smash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the Pyu at Prome, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> the Tala<strong>in</strong>g at Thaton may have been <strong>in</strong>cidental.<br />

Before Anawratta's campaign the neighbour<strong>in</strong>g k<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

<strong>of</strong> Cambodia, itself largely H<strong>in</strong>duised, had probably<br />

spread its <strong>in</strong>fluence to the Tala<strong>in</strong>g country for a long<br />

period. Forchhammer po<strong>in</strong>ts out^ that these events are<br />

sufficient to account for the blank <strong>of</strong> five centuries (6th<br />

to 11th) <strong>in</strong> the pohtical history <strong>of</strong> the Tak<strong>in</strong>gs : <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

the 11th century they only emerge <strong>in</strong> order to receive<br />

another crush<strong>in</strong>g blow <strong>in</strong> 1057 A.D.<br />
