President Hong pointed out that
Songdo Incheon Free Economic Zone is
becoming an even greater object of
interest because it will help determine the
future of the Republic of Korea. He
noted that Incheon possesses superb
international competitiveness plus huge
growth potential, since it is located in the
heart of Northeast Asia. In that regard, he
advised that universities’ research
activities will also be very pivotal to
satisfy international business
requirements, IT/BT, & logistics, and the
needs of IFEZ’s cutting-edge innovation
cluster strategy.
For IFEZ to gain global recognition, he
advised that the Zone has to brand
Incheon inherent regional features besides
equipping itself with international standards
in terms of the amount of materials
and scale, plus develop an organic cooperation
system with universities and other
relevant institutions that satisfy such
requirements.
At a point of time when the harmony
of globalization and localization
(“Glocalization”) is paramount, the
president firmly believes that Inha
University’s differentiation fields such as
IT, BT, NT & logistics will globalize
Korea’s growth engines in the 21st
century. Moreover, they will become a
standard of “Glocalization,” which
pursues Incheon’s development as a hub
city of Northeast Asia.

After serving as the 10th president
over the past four years, Dr. Hong was
reelected as the 11th president of Inha
University recently, showing that his
efforts to allow Inha to become a hub
university of Northeast Asia are paying
off in several aspects.
He frequently advocates the ‘ABC’

Yet, above all he insists that domestic
universities also have to adapt and grow
like a nation. When compared with the
years preceding his inauguration, Inha
University has posted a 15%’s high
growth rate every year, considering all
management indexes such as school
buildings (1.4 times), budget (1.7 times),
professor SCI (scientific citation index)
paper (1.6 times), e-learning student
numbers (1.7 times), the examinations
competition rate for entrance (3.1 times),
the percentage of employment (2.4
times), and dispatch of students for
studying abroad dispatch (6.8 times) - in
comparison with foreign universities’
normal growth rate of 7%.
Over the past four years, president
Hong assisted with the collection of
232.4 billion won (around $245 million)
in conjunction with outward
contributions, excluding foundation
contributions. As a result of these efforts,
Inha University is maintaining its status
as one of the nation’s top 10 universities
over the past four years according to the
survey by the local JoongAng Daily
newspaper, SCI paper numbers are
rapidly on the increase and overseas
awareness about Inha is growing fast,
Hong pointed out.
Concerning university management
tasks as well as goals over the
forthcoming four years, Hong said he
would strive for talent production needed
for global knowledge society economy
through advanced education, pointing out
that to make knowledge-based society
education’s frame stand, uniform,
unilateral, and vertical education’s frame
have to be eliminated.
To this end, he committed himself to
establishing the university’s identity as
the “Global Knowledge Enterprise
University,” besides promoting the 10-
10-management strategy (annual
university growth rate of 10% plus 10%
benefit boost) for the university’s
continuous growth as well as its second
campus expansion’s smooth discussion
with the authorities concerned.
In the second stage BK21 project too,
announced by MOE recently, Inha
University became a focal point of other
universities’ attention by making great
strides toward becoming a researchcentered
university, as the University’s
12 project teams were selected to receive
50 billion won (around $52.80 million) in
relation to the BK21 project.
