GWS 187. Advanced Topics in Feminist Studies. This course explores a current topic in feminist<br />
studies. Topics may include: gender and autobiography; feminism and <strong>the</strong> cultural politics <strong>of</strong><br />
privacy; human rights and women’s human rights; race and reproductive freedom; feminist film<br />
<strong>the</strong>ory and mass media; science, gender, and technology; transnational feminism; studies in<br />
sexualities; testimonial narratives and trauma studies. P. Chaterjee.<br />
GWS 187J. Women and <strong>the</strong> Writing <strong>of</strong> Science. This seminar course will consider <strong>the</strong> role<br />
<strong>of</strong> women in early modern and Enlightenment science as <strong>the</strong> objects <strong>of</strong> scientific inquiry and<br />
women as scientists or natural philosophers. Reading topics will include: anatomy, astronomy,<br />
ma<strong>the</strong>matics, and physical sciences, along with contemporary <strong>the</strong>ory on gender, science, and<br />
cultures <strong>of</strong> pre-1800 Europe. J. Wernimont.<br />
GWS 188. Advanced Topics in Queer Studies. This course explores a current topic in queer<br />
studies and <strong>the</strong> history and cultural politics <strong>of</strong> sexualities. Topics <strong>of</strong> study include: queer histories/<br />
historicizing queerness, queer <strong>of</strong> color critique, law and sexualities, queer popular culture, cinema,<br />
and media, queer nationalisms and transnationalisms. GWS 26 or 36 required. C. Guzaitis.<br />
GWS 189. Doing Feminist Research. This course explores a range <strong>of</strong> feminist methodologies and<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers students practical guidance in doing feminist research. Guest speakers will demonstrate and<br />
reflect on feminist research within <strong>the</strong>ir disciplines and in relation to <strong>the</strong> inter-discipline <strong>of</strong> Gender<br />
and Women’s Studies. Quantitative, qualitative, and hybrid methods will be explored in academic<br />

<strong>of</strong> work in Gender and Women’s Studies through readings, student-led discussion and analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

GWS 191. Senior Thesis. Thesis is an original investigation on a topic in Gender and Women’s<br />
Studies within <strong>the</strong> discipline <strong>of</strong> concentration, completed under <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reader in <strong>the</strong><br />
department <strong>of</strong> concentration and a reader in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Scripps</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Gender and Women’s<br />

GWS 193. Field Work Experience. Some fieldwork or internship experience involving women’s<br />
issues is required. In consultation with <strong>the</strong> adviser, students will select <strong>the</strong> most appropriate means<br />
by which to fulfill this requirement. It might be fulfilled during <strong>the</strong> school year or summer as an<br />
internship, independent study, volunteer work, fieldwork as part <strong>of</strong> a senior <strong>the</strong>sis, or as part <strong>of</strong><br />
