to questions about death and <strong>the</strong> meaning <strong>of</strong> life. Also listed as Religious Studies 144. S. Davis.<br />
179. Greek Moral Philosophy. (CGU) Discussion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> moral philosophies <strong>of</strong> Socrates, Plato,<br />
and Aristotle. Special attention will be paid to <strong>the</strong> Crito, Apology, Republic, and <strong>the</strong> Nichomachean<br />

180. Metaphysics. (CMC) An investigation <strong>of</strong> some traditional problems in Western philosophy<br />
that have been labeled metaphysical, e.g. <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>the</strong> relationship between mind and<br />
body, <strong>the</strong> determinism-free will debate, and <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> space and time. This year <strong>the</strong> topics will<br />
be (1) personal identity, that is, what makes a person <strong>the</strong> same person through time, and (2) free<br />
will and determinism. Prerequisite: at least one previous course in philosophy or permission <strong>of</strong><br />

185N JT. Topics in Neurophilosophy. This course is an examination <strong>of</strong> selected issues at <strong>the</strong><br />
intersection <strong>of</strong> contemporary philosophy and neuroscience. Topics may include <strong>the</strong> philosophical,<br />
<strong>the</strong>oretical, and empirical bases <strong>of</strong> social (cognitive) neuroscience; <strong>the</strong> neurobiology <strong>of</strong> belief<br />
attribution and “mind-reading”; <strong>the</strong> metaphysical relationship between <strong>the</strong> mind and <strong>the</strong> brain; <strong>the</strong><br />
nature <strong>of</strong> sensory modalities; as well as <strong>the</strong> bearing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neurosciences on issues in <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong><br />

The study <strong>of</strong> politics includes a broad range <strong>of</strong> subject matter, including American politics, political<br />
<strong>the</strong>ory, comparative politics, international relations, and political economy. The Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Politics and International Relations is committed to interdisciplinary approaches to <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>se subjects, and is prepared to accept, for example, courses in history, economics, and legal<br />
studies towards completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major.<br />
Students are advised to consult with <strong>the</strong>ir major adviser in order to choose a set <strong>of</strong> courses that best<br />
serves <strong>the</strong>ir interests, academic goals, and career objectives. The politics and international relations<br />
