Campus Facilities<br />

The campus <strong>of</strong> 33 acres is characterized by spacious vistas and intimate courtyards with more<br />

than a dozen fountains. The original buildings were designed in <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean Revival style<br />

by Gordon B. Kaufmann in collaboration with Edward Huntsman-Trout, landscape architect. The<br />

campus, widely recognized for its beauty, is on <strong>the</strong> National Register <strong>of</strong> Historic Places. Since 2009<br />

<strong>the</strong> entire campus has been made wireless for internet access.<br />

Residence Halls<br />

There are nine residence halls, each with its own living room and upstairs library. All student rooms<br />

are wired to <strong>the</strong> campus network and Internet. Each residence hall has its own 24-hour computer<br />

center with a minimum <strong>of</strong> three computers (Macintosh and PC) with access to course and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

specialized s<strong>of</strong>tware.<br />

Janet Jacks Balch Hall<br />

The hall houses most administrative <strong>of</strong>fices, including <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Admission, as well as<br />

classrooms and faculty <strong>of</strong>fices.<br />

Bette Cree Edwards Humanities Building<br />

In addition to classroom and faculty <strong>of</strong>fices, <strong>the</strong> Humanities Building houses an auditorium for<br />

lectures and films, and a large faculty lounge.<br />

Clark Humanities Museum<br />

The Museum is housed in <strong>the</strong> Bette Cree Edwards Humanities Building. Linked to <strong>the</strong> Humanities<br />

Program at <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Museum’s exhibitions reflect <strong>the</strong> concerns <strong>of</strong> faculty teaching in this<br />

area and <strong>of</strong>ten enhance specific course <strong>of</strong>ferings. For students interested in museum careers, <strong>the</strong><br />

Clark Humanities Museum <strong>of</strong>fers possibilities for internships and related activities.<br />

Ella Strong Denison Library<br />

The Ella Strong Denison Library is a special collections and rare books library. The Macpherson<br />

Collection <strong>of</strong> more than 3,000 books, by and about significant women, contains many primary<br />

source materials for original research, surpassing those available at many major universities and<br />

graduate schools. The Ellen Browning <strong>Scripps</strong> Papers highlight <strong>the</strong> <strong>Scripps</strong> <strong>College</strong> Archives, an<br />

important resource for <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> women’s education. The Rare Book Room has many treasures,<br />

including rare manuscripts, incunabula, and books from fine presses<br />

Honnold Mudd Library<br />

The nearby Honnold Mudd Library is a full circulating library that serves and is funded by all <strong>of</strong><br />

The Claremont <strong>College</strong>s.
