Course Descriptions<br />

49. Introduction to Media Studies. This course presents a comprehensive view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> issues<br />

important to media studies, including <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> new technologies, visual literacy,<br />

ideological analysis and <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> content. Students will read <strong>the</strong>ory, history and fiction;<br />

view films and television programs; and write research and opinion papers. T. Tran.<br />

190 JT. Senior Seminar in Media Studies. This is a team-taught <strong>the</strong>sis- and project-based<br />

seminar to be taken during <strong>the</strong> fall semester <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> senior year. This seminar will emphasize <strong>the</strong><br />

development <strong>of</strong> a senior exercise in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three tracks: film/video, critical studies, and digital/<br />

electronic. Students in <strong>the</strong> critical studies or critical studies: film studies option will develop a major<br />

writing project that may be used in conjunction with <strong>the</strong>ir senior <strong>the</strong>sis in <strong>the</strong> spring. Students in <strong>the</strong><br />

film/video and digital/electronic tracks will complete an approved project and a major paper about<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir work or area <strong>of</strong> concentration. The course prepares students with <strong>the</strong> skills and knowledge to<br />

continue <strong>the</strong>ir Media Studies practice and research post-graduation. T. Tran.<br />

191 SC. Senior Thesis in Media Studies. This course meets <strong>the</strong> senior <strong>the</strong>sis requirement for<br />

<strong>Scripps</strong>’ Media Studies majors completing a concentration in Critical Studies or Critical Studies:<br />

Film Studies option except those selected to attempt honors in <strong>the</strong> major. Prerequisite: MS 190JT.<br />

191H SC. Honors Senior Thesis in Media Studies. This course meets <strong>the</strong> senior <strong>the</strong>sis<br />

requirement for those <strong>Scripps</strong>’ Media Studies majors chosen to attempt honors in <strong>the</strong> major and<br />

completing concentrations in Critical Studies or Critical Studies: Film Studies option. Prerequisite:<br />

MS 190JT and Media Studies faculty approval <strong>of</strong> honors proposal. Staff.<br />

192H SC. Honors Senior Project in Media Studies. This course meets <strong>the</strong> senior project<br />

requirement for those <strong>Scripps</strong>’ Media Studies majors chosen to attempt honors in <strong>the</strong> major and<br />

completing concentrations in film/video or digital/electronic media. Prerequisite: MS 190JT and<br />

Media Studies faculty approval <strong>of</strong> honors proposal. Staff.<br />

196 JT. Media Internship. This course <strong>of</strong>fers academic credit for internships at a media-related<br />

industry or institution. On-site work is integrated into <strong>the</strong> academic curriculum through an<br />

independent written or production project and must be fully documented. May be taken twice for<br />

credit. Pass/Fail only. Staff.<br />
