described as “firefighter” or “cowboy”) where male colleagues regularly use locker room language<br />

<strong>and</strong> revel <strong>in</strong> sexual <strong>in</strong>nuendo. Women technologists experience a double whammy. Fortyseven<br />

percent feel <strong>the</strong> pressures of an onerous lab coat culture, while 37% feel sidel<strong>in</strong>ed by an<br />

exclusionary geek culture.<br />

The <strong>A<strong>the</strong>na</strong> Factor survey research allows us to measure <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cidence of key macho behaviors <strong>in</strong><br />

SET companies (see figures 2.1 <strong>and</strong> 2.2). The most shock<strong>in</strong>g data po<strong>in</strong>t to <strong>the</strong> prevalence of sexual<br />

harassment. The figures are higher <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g fields <strong>and</strong> lower <strong>in</strong> scientific fields, but overall,<br />

fully 63% of women <strong>in</strong> SET have been <strong>the</strong> victim of sexual harassment on <strong>the</strong> job.<br />

More than one woman spoke about <strong>the</strong> predatory male culture at <strong>the</strong>ir companies. Jillian, a young<br />

high potential at one of <strong>the</strong> world’s lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>technology</strong> firms, described it this way: “It rem<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

A Glossary of Terms <strong>in</strong> Macho SET Cultures<br />

Lab Coat Culture. This term conjures up <strong>the</strong> esoteric world of scientists bent on splic<strong>in</strong>g genes <strong>in</strong> a strange<br />

new world of syn<strong>the</strong>tic biology—or discover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> next miracle drug. Picture a scientist wear<strong>in</strong>g protective<br />

goggles, shrouded <strong>in</strong> a white lab coat, te<strong>the</strong>red to an electron microscope 10 to 12 hours a day, six days a week.<br />

Lab environments are hostile to women not so much because of attitudes (women scientists are generally treated<br />

with respect) but because of work<strong>in</strong>g conditions: <strong>the</strong> extreme hours, <strong>the</strong> sheer relentlessness of <strong>the</strong> face time<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved. Focus group participants talked about regularly work<strong>in</strong>g around <strong>the</strong> clock to meet <strong>the</strong> “unforgiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dem<strong>and</strong>s” of experimental protocols.<br />

The tyranny of <strong>the</strong> lab coat culture is grounded <strong>in</strong> two phenomena. There are <strong>the</strong> constra<strong>in</strong>ts of <strong>the</strong> work itself.<br />

As Nancy Lane expla<strong>in</strong>s (see <strong>the</strong> sidebar “The Lab Coat Culture”), a scientist can’t just put an experiment on hold<br />

while she drops by her house to fix d<strong>in</strong>ner for <strong>the</strong> kids. The dem<strong>and</strong>s can be overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> women also<br />

often fall victim to <strong>the</strong>ir own altruism. As one focus group participant expla<strong>in</strong>ed, “I feel enormous pressure. Every<br />

hour I’m not <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lab is one more hour someone has to wait for <strong>the</strong> drug that could save <strong>the</strong>ir lives.”<br />

Hard Hat Culture. This term evokes <strong>the</strong> macho culture that dom<strong>in</strong>ates many eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g fields—a hard hat<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> m<strong>and</strong>atory headgear for eng<strong>in</strong>eers work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>es, oil ref<strong>in</strong>eries, smelt<strong>in</strong>g plants, mach<strong>in</strong>e shops, <strong>and</strong><br />

construction sites. Women often feel conspicuous <strong>and</strong> targeted <strong>in</strong> hard hat cultures, <strong>the</strong> victims of various k<strong>in</strong>ds of<br />

predatory behavior. Vulgarities <strong>and</strong> sexual “humor” permeate <strong>the</strong>se places. One woman said she “stood out like a<br />

sore thumb.” Ano<strong>the</strong>r reported need<strong>in</strong>g to do a “whistle-check” on <strong>the</strong> clo<strong>the</strong>s she wore to work—she wanted to<br />

make sure that she didn’t provoke a barrage of whistles <strong>and</strong> catcalls.<br />

In some <strong>in</strong>dustries, this hard hat culture is known as a “firefighter” culture, where <strong>the</strong> most admired <strong>in</strong>dividual at<br />

<strong>the</strong> plant is <strong>the</strong> larger-than-life male who runs around deal<strong>in</strong>g with various emergencies—putt<strong>in</strong>g out actual <strong>and</strong><br />

proverbial fires.<br />

Geek Culture. Picture that <strong>in</strong>credibly bright, gawky, A-V guy from high school who preferred hunker<strong>in</strong>g down<br />

with a computer manual than go<strong>in</strong>g out on a date <strong>and</strong> you’ve got <strong>the</strong> stereotypical geek. Alpha male techies<br />

have m<strong>in</strong>imal social skills <strong>and</strong> can be awkward around women, but this awkwardness coexists with enormous<br />

arrogance. Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g schools seem to breed a type of male superiority: Women, it is assumed, just don’t have<br />

what it takes to succeed <strong>in</strong> highly technical fields. One focus group participant described a recent uncomfortable<br />

experience: A male colleague walked up to a group where she was <strong>the</strong> only female. The man shook <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> of<br />

every man but avoided contact with her. “I could feel his anxiety <strong>in</strong> assess<strong>in</strong>g how to h<strong>and</strong>le greet<strong>in</strong>g me,” she<br />

noted. “But he also didn’t th<strong>in</strong>k I was important. So <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> end he just chose not to deal with me.”<br />

Tech women talked about <strong>the</strong> “div<strong>in</strong>g catch” behavior that is center stage at <strong>technology</strong> companies. Alpha male<br />

techies come to <strong>the</strong> rescue—zoom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> at <strong>the</strong> eleventh hour like Superman or <strong>the</strong> Lone Ranger to save a system<br />

that is threaten<strong>in</strong>g to crash. Women f<strong>in</strong>d it extremely difficult to take <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>ds of risks <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se<br />

saves—<strong>the</strong>ir buddy system just isn’t strong enough to save <strong>the</strong>m if <strong>the</strong>y were to fail. They resent <strong>the</strong> fact that<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g a div<strong>in</strong>g catch is often <strong>the</strong> only way to get promoted at a tech company.
