cultures <strong>and</strong> extreme work pressures are cited more often than a disappo<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g compensation<br />

package as reasons for leav<strong>in</strong>g SET jobs.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g that half of SET women ab<strong>and</strong>on <strong>the</strong>ir field is particularly problematic s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>se<br />

are uniquely qualified <strong>and</strong> unusually committed women. Many devoted years to acquir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

specialized skill set. The fact that antigens <strong>in</strong> SET cultures force <strong>the</strong>m to give up on what <strong>the</strong>y so<br />

passionately believe <strong>in</strong> is deeply disturb<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Take Mir<strong>and</strong>a, who recently earned a PhD <strong>in</strong> chemical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> now holds a prestigious<br />

postdoc position at an East Coast university. Despite numerous obstacles thrown up by<br />

unsupportive teachers <strong>and</strong> skeptical parents, she made it through high school <strong>and</strong> college with<br />

her love of <strong>science</strong> <strong>in</strong>tact <strong>and</strong> embarked on her PhD <strong>in</strong>tend<strong>in</strong>g to become an academic. However,<br />

<strong>in</strong>stead of streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g her resolve, her experiences <strong>in</strong> graduate school have caused her<br />

commitment to waver.<br />
