Methods of Assessment Microbiology 50% Summative assessments (1) MCQ assessment of material delivered in lectures. This accounts for 33% ex 50% of the Aetiology and Mechanisms of Disease. It comprises of 70 MCQ questions, each question has five possible answers of which only one is correct. (2) MCQ assessment of the practical course. This accounts for 17% ex 50% of the Aetiology and Mechanisms of Disease. It comprises of 30 MCQ questions, each question has five possible answers of which only one is correct. Formative assessments: Students are required to answer up 15 questions per practical session. These are contained within a practical manual provided and answered directly into this manual. Pathology 50% Summative – MCQ assessment of material taught during module. The examination is 2 hours in duration and comprises 200 statements which the student must mark as true/false in addition to a series of extended matching questions. Grading Pass >/= 50% 0-39 Fail- poor grasp of basic material 40-49 Fail – Some understanding of basic concepts 50-59 Pass – Adequate grasp of material. 60-69 Pass – Demonstrates clear understanding of material 70-100 Pass – Excellent understanding of basic material with ability to integrate disparate topics. Formative – informal question and answer session to be completed during lecture slots with sample MCQs to be answered. Evaluation Feedback is collected via a web-based survey which is held every second year. This survey analyses students’ perception of the course, lectures, lecturers and practical classes. The recommendations garnered from these evaluations inform subsequent teaching practice. 46

Venue: Standardised program on two sites St James Hospital (SJH) and Adelaide and Meath Hospital (AMNCH) Aims The Year 2 Introduction to Clinical Practice & Clinical Skills course is mandatory and aims to introduce students to the basic elements of clinical practice so that students can maximise their learning opportunities as they proceed through the clinical undergraduate years. • To develop, at first in a laboratory setting, the technical skills essential for the delivery of a safe effective service to patients. Students learn a range of practical skills including taking a clinical history, performing an examination and interpreting simple investigations • To focus directly on the range of skills necessary to ensure that students have rational and empathetic interactions with patients, in particular excellent listening and communication skills • To assist the development of the student as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team Course Content The program aims to deliver • Systems based bedside Clinical Examination • Practical Clinical Skills contact time • Shadowing allied health professionals and learning the skills of multidisciplinary team working • Communication Skills training • OPD exposure • History taking, preparation and case presentations • Series of seminars e.g. ECG, X-ray, Blood Profiles, Health & Safety, Hand Washing, Wound Care 47
