GBM Markets – Structuring
The financial needs of our clients can be incredibly complex. Structurers use their
ingenuity to tailor products around those needs.
What it involves
As a structurer, you will package and price complex derivative products on behalf
of our clients. Working closely with the Sales and Trading teams, you’ll analyse a
client’s particular hedging or investment strategy and then build an appropriate
product solution around it. This is highly quantitative work that will see you
employing sophisticated mathematical models and interpreting the intricacies
of individual products, hedging institutional risk scenarios or meeting investor
requirements.
What we look for
Given the quantitative bias of this role, a background in mathematics, science
or engineering would be a real advantage. You will also need to be highly adept
at recognising patterns and solving complex problems. Communication and
interpersonal skills are an absolute must, since you’ll be working closely with our
front-office teams on a daily basis.

the market. It allows our traders to formulate robust strategies, and our clients to
make informed decisions about their risk exposures and investments.
What it involves
Research analysts are client-focused and independent from the trading desks; they
typically specialise in a sector or product, becoming an expert in that specific area.
Strategists, by contrast, cover broader areas and work closely with our trading
desks. GBM also houses a specialist division called Quantitative Solutions that
uses advanced quantitative models to enhance investment and risk management
techniques.
What we look for
If you enjoy intellectually rigorous work, this is an excellent career choice. As a
researcher, your insights will not only feed into major financial decisions; they may
even shape the opinion of entire markets. Excellent analytical skills are essential,as
is the ability to communicate your findings clearly and concisely is also key.
