Workshop on<br />
Research Techniques<br />
in Social Sciences<br />
A three-day workshop on Effective Research Techniques in<br />
Social Sciences was recently held at HEC Regional Centre,<br />
Karachi. Thirty faculty members representing different<br />
universities/institutions of Sindh attended the workshop.<br />
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Ishrat Hussain,<br />
Director, Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi.<br />
He said that research in the area of Social Sciences was<br />
previously neglected. He highlighted the need for research in<br />
Social Sciences, and how it creates impact on the socioeconomic<br />
development of the country.<br />
On the first day, Dr. Syed Jaffar Ahmed, Department of<br />
Pakistan Studies, University of Karachi discussed in detail the<br />
Proforma developed by HEC for research grant in Social<br />
Science.<br />
On the second day, Dr. Fatah Muhammad Burfat, Department<br />
of Sociology, University of Karachi highlighted the research<br />
methodologies and its impact on country's development.<br />
On third day, Dr. Moonis Ahmar, Department of International<br />
Relations, University of Karachi shared his experience related<br />
to effective research techniques and discussed its<br />
importance.<br />
Dr. Nasiruddin Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Karachi<br />
was chief guest in the concluding ceremony. He appreciated<br />
HEC Regional Centre for conducting the workshop on a very<br />
important topic.<br />
Mr. Fida Hussian, Regional Director, HEC explained the<br />
objectives of the workshop and gave details of certain<br />
initiatives of the <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>Commission</strong> in the area of<br />
research and development.<br />

Indigenous<br />
Fellowships<br />
under Phase-II<br />
The English Language Teaching Reform<br />
(ELTR), under its Phase-II, has launched<br />
Long-Term Indigenous Fellowships<br />
Programme in four universities for the<br />
faculty of public sector colleges/<br />
universities.<br />
This is the only project of HEC through<br />
which the college sector has also<br />
b e n e f i t t e d t h r o u g h i t s faculty<br />
development programme. So far, 125<br />
faculty members of public sector colleges<br />
and universities have benefitted from such<br />
long-term fellowships under ELTR (Phase-<br />
I). The Project will award 150 long-term<br />
fellowships under Phase-II.<br />
The fellowships are being offered in MPhil<br />
(TESL) at Beaconhouse National<br />
University, Lahore, MA (ELT and<br />
Linguistics) at University of the Punjab,<br />
Lahore, Advance Diploma (TEFL) at<br />
Forman Christian College University,<br />
Lahore and ADP (TEFL) at Aga Khan<br />
University, Karachi.<br />
Almost 60 fellowships have been awarded<br />
to the universities for <strong>2010</strong>-11. The<br />
candidates from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and<br />
Balochistan have been allocated special<br />
seats at University of the Punjab, because<br />
no university from these provinces<br />
submitted a proposal for long-term<br />
fellowships.<br />
Those fulltime/permanent faculty<br />
members of public sector colleges and<br />
universities are eligible, who are teaching<br />
English at graduate and post graduate<br />
level, are under 50 years of age, and have<br />
a minimum of 16-year education, besides<br />
at least one year experience of teaching<br />
English as a subject.<br />
