light for everyone to emulate his character and
qualities as he himself adopted and employed
them in his life, and worked hard for the
betterment of society through education and
literature,” he added.
Dr. Bughio emphasized that Literature is the most
powerful media to bring changes in the mind of
readers who can play a vital role in bringing
reforms in the society.
The Faculty of Arts, University of Sindh, Jamshoro

marked the 157 birth anniversary of a legend scholar,
writer and poet by organizing a symposium entitled
“Contribution of Shams-ul-Ulama Mirza Kalich Beg
towards Social Development/Reforms,” under the
auspices of Shams-ul-Ulama Mirza Kalich Beg Chair. Dr.
Muhammad Qasim Bughio, Dean, Faculty of Arts and
Director of the Chair, presided over the symposium.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bughio said that Mirza
Kalich Beg played a pioneering role in Sindhi literature
and, through translations, he not only enriched Sindhi
language but also introduced many foreign scholars to

scholars and intellectuals stressed the need of
publication of his rare books and preservation of
manuscripts. Ms. Meher Afroz Mirza Habib, grand
daughter of Shams-ul-Ulama, Mr. Gul
Muhammad Umrani, Mr. Jami Chandio, and Mr.
Aijaz Ali Beg Mirza, grand son of Mirza Saheb also
spoke on the occasion.
Ms. Meher Afroze said that Mirza Kalich Beg's
motto was to spread knowledge, particularly
among women, as he firmly believed that female
education would help in bringing a change in
society.
KMU Workshop
on Medical Ethics
The aim of the workshop was to initiate a
dialogue on the issue and develop preliminary
recommendations for c o n s i d e ra t i o n ,
implementation and further discussion. The
theme of the discussion was “Practicing Ethical
Medicine in a Challenging Environment”.
In his remarks, Mr. Ijaz Rahim lamented the
growing commercialism in the society. He said
there were role models in the past but social
values of the modern society had been changed.
The Directorate of Research and Development, Khyber
Medical University (KMU), Peshawar organized a twoday
workshop and panel discussion on “Medical Ethics”
at Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI).
Mr. Ijaz Rahim, former Chief Secretary, Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa, was the chief guest while Dr.
Mohammad Hafizullah, Vice Chancellor, KMU
participated in the panel discussion as Co-Chair.
Dr. Hafizullah said that the issue of medical ethics
was ignored in the past but KMU has taken a bold
step to debate the subject and to gather
suggestions from all stakeholders. He assured
that KMU will continue to hold such activities and
“during reformation of medical curriculum at
various levels, we shall include suggestions
pertaining to ethics capacity development.”
Prof. Farhat Moazzam and Dr. Aamir Jaffery from
Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Culture, Sindh
Institute of Urology and Transplant, Karachi,
were resource persons of the workshop.
