UoS Symposium<br />
on Mirza Kalich Beg<br />
Sindhi readers. “He was a role model and beacon<br />
light for everyone to emulate his character and<br />
qualities as he himself adopted and employed<br />
them in his life, and worked hard for the<br />
betterment of society through education and<br />
literature,” he added.<br />
Dr. Bughio emphasized that Literature is the most<br />
powerful media to bring changes in the mind of<br />
readers who can play a vital role in bringing<br />
reforms in the society.<br />
The Faculty of Arts, University of Sindh, Jamshoro<br />

marked the 157 birth anniversary of a legend scholar,<br />
writer and poet by organizing a symposium entitled<br />
“Contribution of Shams-ul-Ulama Mirza Kalich Beg<br />
towards Social Development/Reforms,” under the<br />
auspices of Shams-ul-Ulama Mirza Kalich Beg Chair. Dr.<br />
Muhammad Qasim Bughio, Dean, Faculty of Arts and<br />
Director of the Chair, presided over the symposium.<br />
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bughio said that Mirza<br />
Kalich Beg played a pioneering role in Sindhi literature<br />
and, through translations, he not only enriched Sindhi<br />
language but also introduced many foreign scholars to<br />
Highlighting services of Mirza Kalich Beg, noted<br />
scholars and intellectuals stressed the need of<br />
publication of his rare books and preservation of<br />
manuscripts. Ms. Meher Afroz Mirza Habib, grand<br />
daughter of Shams-ul-Ulama, Mr. Gul<br />
Muhammad Umrani, Mr. Jami Chandio, and Mr.<br />
Aijaz Ali Beg Mirza, grand son of Mirza Saheb also<br />
spoke on the occasion.<br />
Ms. Meher Afroze said that Mirza Kalich Beg's<br />
motto was to spread knowledge, particularly<br />
among women, as he firmly believed that female<br />
education would help in bringing a change in<br />
society.<br />
KMU Workshop<br />
on Medical Ethics<br />
The aim of the workshop was to initiate a<br />
dialogue on the issue and develop preliminary<br />
recommendations for c o n s i d e ra t i o n ,<br />
implementation and further discussion. The<br />
theme of the discussion was “Practicing Ethical<br />
Medicine in a Challenging Environment”.<br />
In his remarks, Mr. Ijaz Rahim lamented the<br />
growing commercialism in the society. He said<br />
there were role models in the past but social<br />
values of the modern society had been changed.<br />
The Directorate of Research and Development, Khyber<br />
Medical University (KMU), Peshawar organized a twoday<br />
workshop and panel discussion on “Medical Ethics”<br />
at Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI).<br />
Mr. Ijaz Rahim, former Chief Secretary, Khyber<br />
Pakhtunkhwa, was the chief guest while Dr.<br />
Mohammad Hafizullah, Vice Chancellor, KMU<br />
participated in the panel discussion as Co-Chair.<br />
Dr. Hafizullah said that the issue of medical ethics<br />
was ignored in the past but KMU has taken a bold<br />
step to debate the subject and to gather<br />
suggestions from all stakeholders. He assured<br />
that KMU will continue to hold such activities and<br />
“during reformation of medical curriculum at<br />
various levels, we shall include suggestions<br />
pertaining to ethics capacity development.”<br />
Prof. Farhat Moazzam and Dr. Aamir Jaffery from<br />
Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Culture, Sindh<br />
Institute of Urology and Transplant, Karachi,<br />
were resource persons of the workshop.<br />
