Workshop on<br />

Flood Disaster Management<br />

towards the universities and higher education<br />

institutions to come forward and reach out to the<br />

troubled and re-located affected population. He said<br />

in post-flood situation, Pakistan would be venturing<br />

to face a largest rehabilitation of around 50 million<br />

people and a large livestock.<br />

Dr. Sohail Naqvi, Executive Director, HEC stressed<br />

that each university should develop its plan in line<br />

with its expertise and pool their resources to do<br />

relief and rehabilitation work in a systematic<br />

manner.<br />

The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences<br />

(UVAS), Lahore organized a national workshop on<br />

“Flood Disaster Management” to develop strategic<br />

recommendations for relief and rehabilitation of<br />

flood-hit livestock populations.<br />

More than 80 participants representing universities,<br />

livestock departments, federal research institutions,<br />

medical profession, Pakistan Veterinary Medical<br />

Council and Pakistan Medical Society attended the<br />

workshop.<br />

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Javaid R. Laghari,<br />

Chairperson HEC, said the <strong>Commission</strong> is looking<br />

Dr. Muhammad Nawaz, Vice Chancellor, UVAS said<br />

the University volunteer teams had vaccinated some<br />

60,000 animals besides performing de-worming and<br />

other treatment in flood-hit areas.<br />

Dr. Masood Rabbani, Director UDL, organized the<br />

participants into four working groups for making the<br />

recommendation, which were later compiled by Dr.<br />

Rabbani and Dr. Nasim Ahmad. Recommendations<br />

developed by key scientists from all over the country<br />

are very useful for the implementation of relief and<br />

rehabilitation measures in flood affected areas.<br />

UVAS Workshop on<br />

Angiogenesis, Toxicology<br />

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Muhammad<br />

Nawaz, Vice Chancellor, UVAS appreciated the<br />

initiative taken by the <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>Commission</strong><br />

(HEC) for promotion of scientific research in<br />

Pakistan.<br />

Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, Director Research and<br />

Chairman, Department of Pharmacology and<br />

Toxicology also expressed his gratitude to HEC for<br />

providing financial support so as to invite foreign<br />

scientist for this workshop.<br />

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology,<br />

University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences<br />

(UVAS), Lahore organized a one-week workshop on<br />

“Modern Techniques in Angiogenesis and<br />

Toxicology”, in collaboration with the Department of<br />

Clinical Neurosciences, University of Cambridge, UK.<br />

Dr. Sohail Ejaz from Department of Clinical<br />

Neurosciences, Addenbrooke's Hospital, University<br />

of Cambridge, was the resource person for this<br />

training workshop.<br />

The efforts of Dr. Sohail Ejaz for conducting the<br />

workshop served as a milestone to improve the<br />

technical skills of more than 100 young scientists<br />

and faculty members from assorted research<br />

domains.<br />

Dr. Ejaz also visited University College of Pharmacy<br />

(UCP), University of the Punjab and delivered a<br />

seminar on Angiogenesis. He emphasized upon the<br />

students and faculty members for conducting<br />

collaborative research and establishment of<br />

Angiogenesis research laboratory at the University.<br />
