University News GIKIAA to Continue Financing Students The members of the Executive Council (EC) of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute Alumni Association (GIKIAA) said that the provision of financial assistances would continue and at present the Association has been financing about 10 deserving students of the Institute on merit-cum-need basis. They decided to provide Rs. 1.2 million in the current academic year. The delegation comprising Mr. Tahir Akbar, President GIKIAA, Mr. Abu Bakr Bin Zahid, Joint Secretary, Mr. Umar Inam and Mr. Owais Sher met Mr. Jehangir Bashar, Rector, GIKI, Deans, officer bearers of 24 societies and students during their visit to the Institute recently. They discussed emerging technologies, value of the students in the job markets, holding seminars and workshops, curricular and co-curricular activities, competitive environment, strengthening of student societies and their welfare activities and establishment of new societies. Media Festival at GIKI A three-day All Pakistan Media Festival was held at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI) of Engineering, Sciences and Technology. The festival was organized by GIK Institute Media Club and both girls and boys from all over the country participated in the event. Journalists from both electronic and print media, especially members of Abaseen Union of Journalists, and Gandhara Union of Journalists participated in the festival. The festival aimed to educate the students about both electronic and print media while providing them a platform to put forward their suggestions and skills which would be beneficial for them as well as masses of the country. The students exchanged views with their colleagues who belonged to different provinces and universities of the country. The participants said that electronic media has changed the entire spectrum during the last few years and it has also adversely affected the print media in the country. QAU Inaugurates School of Management Sciences The Quaid-i-Azam School of Management Sciences (QASMS) has been inaugurated at the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad. It would offer Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) with specialization in Marketing, Finance and Human Resource Management. Previously, it was the Department of Administrative Sciences. Dr. Masoom Yasinzai, Vice Chancellor, QAU inaugurated the School building and formally welcomed the newly enrolled students of BBA. He said that they have made the right decision by choosing QASMS for higher learning. “The University has recently introduced three new schools under the umbrella of the Faculty of Social Sciences, which include School of Economics, School of Management Sciences, and the School of International Relations and Political Science. Two new Schools, School of Law and the School of Media Sciences would also be launched soon,” he said. The Vice Chancellor said that the University has started BS four-year programme and the departments are expanding with a rapid pace not only in the Social Sciences but also in the fields of Natural and Biological Sciences. Dr. G. S. K. Niazi, Chairman, QASMS said, “With its well-designed programmes, outstanding faculty and state-of-the-art facilities, the School will definitely be ranked among one of the best institutes of Management Sciences.” 21
University News IIUI Seminar on US, Pakistan and China Relations Greenwich University Signs MoUs with Malaysian Universities The Greenwich University has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with two universities in Malaysia, Limkokwing University and Universiti Malaysia Perlis as a part of its commitment to raising the standard of education. The objective of the collaboration is to strengthen, promote and develop cooperation with Malaysia, which has emerged as an economic leader in Asia by setting high standards in education. Universiti Malaysia Perlis is a State university of Malaysia, which enjoys the reputation of an internationally competitive academic and research institution offering courses in engineering, computer, and communication from bachelors to PhD level. Limkokwing University is an International University with a global presence across three continents, with over 30000 students studying from more than 150 countries. The universities will extend cooperation to each other in the field of research through faculty exchange, joint projects, publications and exchange of information. Moreover, the universities will hold joint training programmes for faculty and students, national and international conferences, seminars, workshops, sociocultural tours and other areas of strategic importance. The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) recently hosted a seminar on “United States, Pakistan and China Relations in the Changing Regional Scenario” in collaboration with Pakistan-China Institute. Prominent US Scholar, Prof. Stephen Cohen, was the keynote speaker on the occasion. Others speakers included Dr. Anwar Hussain Siddiqui, President IIUI, Mr. Mushahid Hussain Sayyed, Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed, Director, International Institute for Research and Dialogue, IIUI. Speakers highlighted the role of friendly relations among US, Pakistan and China for benefit of the region as a whole. In his keynote address, Prof. Cohen said that it is in best interest of the US to acknowledge the role of China and Pakistan in the changing world scenario as no single country is capable of giving the world peace and stability. He admitted that it was China which always played a positive role in the world soon after its independence in 1949. Dr. Siddiqui highlighted the role of educational institutions for peace and harmony in the society. He said that IIUI is preparing young generation in building future of human beings. Mr. Sayyed spoke on role of Pak-China Institute and said that it was established to strengthen relations with China in all walks of life. Mr. Riaz Ahmed Khan, former Foreign Secretary and Dr. Maliha Lodhi, former envoy to UK and USA, also addressed the gathering. News Flash Asma Usman, student football player of HEC, has been selected by the Pakistan Football Federation for playing in the national team during South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship being held at Dhaka, Bangladesh. Asma is a student of BBA at University of the Punjab, Lahore. 22
