CM Inaugurates Lahore
Biotechnology Park
in the national economy. He said the Government of
Punjab was well aware of the importance of
Biotechnology and its use in the areas of health,
agriculture, environment, industry, vaccine
production and genetic improvement of livestock for
better production.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Member (Operations and
Planning) stressed that the Government must
enhance funding for higher education sector, which
was catering to only 0.5 per cent population in the
country at present.
Mr. Shahbaz Sharif, Chief Minister, Punjab has called
for developing knowledge-based economy through
research and developing better technologies. He
was speaking at a National Biotechnology Exhibition
and Seminar 2010 organized by the Institute of
Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of
Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore in
collaboration with HEC. The Chief Minister also
launched the Lahore Biotechnology Park (LBP) on
the occasion.
The Chief Minister said that the farmers were worst
hit in the history of Pakistan and it was high time that
they should be helped to become contributors again
Dr. Muhammad Nawaz, Vice Chancellor, UVAS said,
“UVAS is playing a pivotal role for development of
research in Veterinary and Animal Sciences. Our
research output of international standard has made
a quantum jump and we have been ranked at
number 12 out of 82 research universities of
Pakistan. We have the expertise to produce all
poultry and animals vaccines and these vaccines are
important for disease prevention and establishing
disease-free zones for export purposes.”
Later, the Vice Chancellor presented a cheque of Rs.
0.5 million to the Chief Minister for the flood relief
activities.
LUMS, University of
Newcastle Sign MoU
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed
between LUMS and the University of Newcastle,
Australia for research collaboration and student
exchange between the Suleman Dawood School of
Business (SDSB), LUMS and the Faculty of Business
and Law, University of Newcastle.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Ahmad J. Durrani,
Vice Chancellor, LUMS and Dr. Nick Saunders, Vice
Chancellor and President, University of Newcastle.
The ceremony was attended by Ms. Fauzia Nasreen,
High Commissioner of Pakistan to Australia and Dr.
Arif Nazir Butt, Dean, SDSB.
Newcastle Business School is University's centre for
undergraduate and postgraduate business
education. It focuses on student-centered,
research-driven teaching to help students develop
the skills and attributes needed to sustain a
successful career based on life-long learning.
SDSB, the first school established at LUMS in 1986,
offers an intensive full-time MBA programme and a
modular Executive MBA programme. In addition, the
Rausing Executive Development Centre (REDC)
offers short-term programmes for executives.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ch. Abdul Rehman, Rector, Superior
University has been appointed as Honorary Conjoint
Fellow in University of Newcastle's Faculty of
Business and Law for three years. Dr. Abdul Rehman
will be contributing to the Centre for institutional
and organisational studies as well as more generally
to the Faculty's international research strategy and
collaborative partnerships.
