CM Inaugurates Lahore<br />
Biotechnology Park<br />
in the national economy. He said the Government of<br />
Punjab was well aware of the importance of<br />
Biotechnology and its use in the areas of health,<br />
agriculture, environment, industry, vaccine<br />
production and genetic improvement of livestock for<br />
better production.<br />
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Member (Operations and<br />
Planning) stressed that the Government must<br />
enhance funding for higher education sector, which<br />
was catering to only 0.5 per cent population in the<br />
country at present.<br />
Mr. Shahbaz Sharif, Chief Minister, Punjab has called<br />
for developing knowledge-based economy through<br />
research and developing better technologies. He<br />
was speaking at a National Biotechnology Exhibition<br />
and Seminar <strong>2010</strong> organized by the Institute of<br />
Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of<br />
Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore in<br />
collaboration with HEC. The Chief Minister also<br />
launched the Lahore Biotechnology Park (LBP) on<br />
the occasion.<br />
The Chief Minister said that the farmers were worst<br />
hit in the history of Pakistan and it was high time that<br />
they should be helped to become contributors again<br />
Dr. Muhammad Nawaz, Vice Chancellor, UVAS said,<br />
“UVAS is playing a pivotal role for development of<br />
research in Veterinary and Animal Sciences. Our<br />
research output of international standard has made<br />
a quantum jump and we have been ranked at<br />
number 12 out of 82 research universities of<br />
Pakistan. We have the expertise to produce all<br />
poultry and animals vaccines and these vaccines are<br />
important for disease prevention and establishing<br />
disease-free zones for export purposes.”<br />
Later, the Vice Chancellor presented a cheque of Rs.<br />
0.5 million to the Chief Minister for the flood relief<br />
activities.<br />
LUMS, University of<br />
Newcastle Sign MoU<br />
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed<br />
between LUMS and the University of Newcastle,<br />
Australia for research collaboration and student<br />
exchange between the Suleman Dawood School of<br />
Business (SDSB), LUMS and the Faculty of Business<br />
and Law, University of Newcastle.<br />
The agreement was signed by Dr. Ahmad J. Durrani,<br />
Vice Chancellor, LUMS and Dr. Nick Saunders, Vice<br />
Chancellor and President, University of Newcastle.<br />
The ceremony was attended by Ms. Fauzia Nasreen,<br />
High <strong>Commission</strong>er of Pakistan to Australia and Dr.<br />
Arif Nazir Butt, Dean, SDSB.<br />
Newcastle Business School is University's centre for<br />
undergraduate and postgraduate business<br />
education. It focuses on student-centered,<br />
research-driven teaching to help students develop<br />
the skills and attributes needed to sustain a<br />
successful career based on life-long learning.<br />
SDSB, the first school established at LUMS in 1986,<br />
offers an intensive full-time MBA programme and a<br />
modular Executive MBA programme. In addition, the<br />
Rausing Executive Development Centre (REDC)<br />
offers short-term programmes for executives.<br />
Meanwhile, Dr. Ch. Abdul Rehman, Rector, Superior<br />
University has been appointed as Honorary Conjoint<br />
Fellow in University of Newcastle's Faculty of<br />
Business and Law for three years. Dr. Abdul Rehman<br />
will be contributing to the Centre for institutional<br />
and organisational studies as well as more generally<br />
to the Faculty's international research strategy and<br />
collaborative partnerships.<br />
