GCU, Punjab Emergency<br />

Service Sign MoU<br />

The Department of Clinical<br />

P s ychology, G o vernment<br />

College University (GCU),<br />

Lahore signed a Memorandum<br />

of Understanding (MoU) with<br />

Punjab Emergency Service<br />

(Rescue 1122) in a special<br />

ceremony. Dr. Khalid Aftab, Vice<br />

Chancellor, GCU Lahore and Dr.<br />

Rizwan Naseer, Director<br />

General, Punjab Emergency<br />

Service (Rescue 1122) signed<br />

the agreement.<br />

Rescue 1122 has engaged the<br />

expertise of GCU clinical<br />

psychologists to work on posttraumatic<br />

stress among rescue<br />

workers and to develop modern<br />

psychological test system for<br />

selection of right people in the<br />

life saving emergency services.<br />

The GCU and Rescue 1122 have<br />

also agreed to work for the<br />

d e v e l o p m e n t o f s a f e r<br />

communities in Pakistan through<br />

research projects and joint<br />

practical initiatives including<br />

conferences, workshops,<br />

a w a r e n e s s a n d t ra i n i n g<br />

programmes and seminars. Both<br />

the parties have also pledged to<br />

share resources, knowledge and<br />

expertise for carrying out the<br />

above mentioned joint projects.<br />

They would also conduct<br />

b e h a v i o u r s t u d i e s o f<br />

communities to prevent road<br />

traffic accidents and injuries.<br />

Psychology briefed the members<br />

about the psychological tests<br />

developed for Pakistan Air Force.<br />

He said that nowadays the<br />

Department is working with PAF<br />

on stress management in pilots.<br />

He hoped that the new<br />

psychological test system which<br />

their Department will develop for<br />

Rescue 1122 would help in<br />

selection of right people in the<br />

life saving emergency services<br />

and would reduce the drop-out<br />

percentage of rescue workers.<br />

Ms. Fouzia Shahin, Academic<br />

Planning and External Links,<br />

GCU said that under the<br />

agreement, Rescue 1122 would<br />

also provide internship and<br />

research opportunities for<br />

students of GCU. She said that<br />

Rescue 1122 accidents, fire<br />

incidents and crime cases data<br />

would also be available to GCU<br />

students for research.<br />

ASSMS<br />

puts Pakistani<br />

Mathematics<br />

on World Map<br />

The Abdus Salam School of<br />

Mathematics Sciences (ASSMS),<br />

Government College University,<br />

Lahore has put Pakistani<br />

Mathematics on the world map,<br />

as the European Mathematical<br />

S o c i e t y ( E M S ) h a s<br />

acknowledged the School as the<br />

Emerging Regional Centre of<br />

Excellence (ERCE) for its<br />

contributions to research at the<br />

international level.<br />

The recognition implies that<br />

young scholars from the<br />

developing countries will receive<br />

support from the European<br />

Union (EU), UNESCO and other<br />

international organizations to<br />

enrol at ASSMS for advanced<br />

studies in diverse areas of<br />

Mathematical Sciences.<br />

EMS will also arrange for the<br />

School European funding for its<br />

further improvement and<br />

r e i n f o r c e m e n t . T h e<br />

Mathematical Society has<br />

expressed its desire to send their<br />

senior mathematicians to the<br />

ASSMS.<br />

The decision to acknowledge<br />

ASSMS as the Emerging<br />

Regional Centre of Excellence<br />

came at a joint meeting of EMS<br />

Committee for Developing<br />

Countries (CDC) and UNESCO in<br />

Budapest recently.<br />

Only three institutions from all<br />

o v e r t h e W o r l d a r e<br />

acknowledged by EMS as<br />

Emerging Regional Centres of<br />

Excellence. The other two are in<br />

India and Vietnam.<br />
