Commission Events Preliminary Meeting of NCRC in Home Economics A preliminary meeting of the National Curriculum Revision Committee (NCRC) in Home Economics was held at HEC Regional Centre, Lahore from October 11-13, 2010. The major objective of the meeting was to develop draft curriculum for four-year i n t e g r a t e d B S d e g r e e programme in Home Economics, following semester system of examination. Dr. Altaf Ali G. Shaikh, Member (Academics), HEC briefed the p a r t i c i p a n t s a b o u t t h e obligations of HEC for review, revision and development of curricula. He said that the Commission is coordinating with respective universities to change annual examination to the semester system. “HEC is striving hard to enhance the quality of education in public sector universities/institutions by developing curricula and making it more compatible with international standards, joboriented and in line with the needs of the society,” Dr. Shaikh said. Dr. Rubina Hakeem, Principal, Rana Liaquat Ali Khan College of Home Economics, Karachi and Mrs. Ghazala Pervez Zaman, Head, Food and Nutrition Department, Government College of Home Economics, Lahore acted as Convener and Secretary of the NCRC, respectively. Dr. Tahir Ali Shah, Deputy Director (Curriculum) HEC coordinated the meeting, while Mr. Arshad Mahmood Malik, Director (Curriculum) HEC participated in the meeting as observer. The meeting agreed that eligibility criteria for admission in BS four-year degree in Home Economics would be FA/FSc or equivalence certificate from the Inter Board Committee of Chairman (IBCC). Students completing Higher Secondary School Certificate in Home Economics from colleges will get the equivalence certificate from IBCC to fulfill eligibility criteria. Dr. Tahir Ali Shah briefed the committee members about s t a n d a r d t e m p l a t e f o r curriculum development of fouryear BS degree programme. He informed the committee about credit hours requirements as well as foundation, major and elective subject courses. He said that the compulsory courses have already been developed by the respective NCRCs. After three-day deliberations, the Committee drafted the fouryear curriculum with five major areas of specializations, including Food and Nutrition, Textiles and Clothing, Art and Design, Human Development and Family Studies, Housing Home Management and Interior Design. The Department of Housing Home Management and Interior Design was split into two groups, Interior and Environmental Design, and Residential M a n a g e m e n t a n d Entrepreneurship. It was decided that the schemes of courses would be taken back to the institutions for discussion with the faculty. Another meeting of the Committee will be held in short course of time to finalize the courses. 11
University News GCU, Punjab Emergency Service Sign MoU The Department of Clinical P s ychology, G o vernment College University (GCU), Lahore signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) in a special ceremony. Dr. Khalid Aftab, Vice Chancellor, GCU Lahore and Dr. Rizwan Naseer, Director General, Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) signed the agreement. Rescue 1122 has engaged the expertise of GCU clinical psychologists to work on posttraumatic stress among rescue workers and to develop modern psychological test system for selection of right people in the life saving emergency services. The GCU and Rescue 1122 have also agreed to work for the d e v e l o p m e n t o f s a f e r communities in Pakistan through research projects and joint practical initiatives including conferences, workshops, a w a r e n e s s a n d t ra i n i n g programmes and seminars. Both the parties have also pledged to share resources, knowledge and expertise for carrying out the above mentioned joint projects. They would also conduct b e h a v i o u r s t u d i e s o f communities to prevent road traffic accidents and injuries. Prof. Zahid Mahmood, Director, D e p a r t m e n t o f C l i n i c a l Psychology briefed the members about the psychological tests developed for Pakistan Air Force. He said that nowadays the Department is working with PAF on stress management in pilots. He hoped that the new psychological test system which their Department will develop for Rescue 1122 would help in selection of right people in the life saving emergency services and would reduce the drop-out percentage of rescue workers. Ms. Fouzia Shahin, Academic Planning and External Links, GCU said that under the agreement, Rescue 1122 would also provide internship and research opportunities for students of GCU. She said that Rescue 1122 accidents, fire incidents and crime cases data would also be available to GCU students for research. ASSMS puts Pakistani Mathematics on World Map The Abdus Salam School of Mathematics Sciences (ASSMS), Government College University, Lahore has put Pakistani Mathematics on the world map, as the European Mathematical S o c i e t y ( E M S ) h a s acknowledged the School as the Emerging Regional Centre of Excellence (ERCE) for its contributions to research at the international level. The recognition implies that young scholars from the developing countries will receive support from the European Union (EU), UNESCO and other international organizations to enrol at ASSMS for advanced studies in diverse areas of Mathematical Sciences. EMS will also arrange for the School European funding for its further improvement and r e i n f o r c e m e n t . T h e Mathematical Society has expressed its desire to send their senior mathematicians to the ASSMS. The decision to acknowledge ASSMS as the Emerging Regional Centre of Excellence came at a joint meeting of EMS Committee for Developing Countries (CDC) and UNESCO in Budapest recently. Only three institutions from all o v e r t h e W o r l d a r e acknowledged by EMS as Emerging Regional Centres of Excellence. The other two are in India and Vietnam. 12
