The cosmopolitan nature of
Australian racing continues to
grow apace. So You Think (High
Chaparral) and last season’s
Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco (Galileo)
were both among nominations when the
entries for this year’s Tattersalls-sponsored
W S Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) closed this
week. And, according to Leigh Jordan, they
‘are definitely the two standouts’ writes
Darryl Sherer. At a media briefing held
at trainer Mark Kavanagh’s Flemington
stables, Jordan explained that Aidan
O’Brien had indicated to him that he was
definitely looking to send horses to this
year’s Spring Carnival, the only caveat
being that the thorny issue of quarantine
protocols being sorted.
two are definitely the two headline entries,” Jordan suggested.
“Aidan O’Brien has said that he is definitely coming back to the
Spring Carnival provided the quarantine situation can be sorted
out.” Referring to the quarantine issue, Jordan said that he had
been in a meeting with AQIS official earlier in the morning and was
confident that situation can be resolved. “The Newmarket quarantine
has been approved and we are meeting on a weekly basis with AQIS.
I am quietly confident we can get there.”
The quarantine situation was cited by Jordan is the reason behind
Godolphin’s omission from Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) entries
but the logjam of international racing is also part of the problem,
as Moonee Valley CEO Michael Browell explained. “The Champion
Stakes at Ascot is the same weekend as the Tatts Cox Plate and
there is also the Arc in October, so it is difficult to attract the best
class horses from around the world and we understand that. For us
the hard work starts now.”
Browell was clearly still upset at the Australian Pattern Committee’s
decision not to upgrade the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes to Group 1
status, having invested over $300,000 to boost the race. Asked if he
thought the decision was a political one, Browell replied firmly, “No
doubt, no doubt,” and wore a determined look when he said, “We will
push for the Moir Stakes to be upgraded to Group 1 status to bolster
Tatts Cox Plate day. Failing that we also have the option of moving the
Manikato Stakes but there are issues to resolve with sponsors there,
but I can say it is certainly something we are looking at.”
Melbourne Racing Club Chairman Alasdair Robertson was
SNITZEL BACK
Triple Crown Syndications’ Hot Snitzel
(Snitzel) has returned to Gerald Ryan’s
Sydney stable this week to prepare for
his spring campaign. The Coolmore
Stud Stakes (Gr 1) over 1200m
at Flemington on Derby Day is his
main goal.
delighted to confirm that HM Queen Elizabeth II had nominated
Tactician (Motivator) for the $2.5 million BMW-sponsored Caulfield
Cup. “It really really is an unprecedented depth of quality entries,
we’ve never seen a quality like it,” he said.
Asked about Tactician, Robertson explained that the Michael Bell-
trained four-year-old is scheduled to run in the Ebor Handicap at York
later this month. “He would have to win or run second to be a serious
chance of coming I would think, but it would be a real boost if he
came.” Tactician, by the Epsom Derby winner Motivator, won the John
Smiths Silver Cup (Listed) over a mile and three-quarters at his most
recent start at York on 9 July.
Last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Descarado (High Chaparral) and
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) victor Americain (Dynaformer) are
among 236 nominations, the most nominations received since 2008
when 282 were taken. International entries are down on last year’s
36 overseas nominations with 22 horses nominated.
Luca Cumani has nominated five horses including 2008 Melbourne
Cup runner-up Bauer (Halling), and recent Goodwood winner Drunken
Sailor (Tendulkar). Five Japanese horses have been entered including
the 2009 Tenno Sho winner Meiner Kitz (Chief Bearhart) and champion
Hong Kong trainer John Moore has nominated the Champion and
Chaters Cup winner Mighty High (Peintre Celebre).
Mark Kavanagh said he is taking things steadily with Whobegotyou
(Street Cry). “He’s coming along nicely, we’ll give him a jumpout soon
and see how he comes through that.” Having already won the race
with Maldivian (Zabeel), Kavanagh indicated that the Cox Plate will be
the spring goal for Whobegotyou. “Of course I’d like to win the Cox
Plate, every trainer wants to win a Cox Plate. I just hope that I can do
it again.”
Regarding his English import December Draw, the six-year-old by
Medecis (GB) the impressive winner of his only two starts in Australia,
Kavanagh was a little more guarded. “He’s coming along well and is
a nice horse, but it’s a long way from Flemington in June to Caulfield
in October.”
The retirement has been announced of Zipping (Danehill).
The now ten-year-old made history last season when
winning his fourth successive Sandown Classic (Gr 2,
2400m) but he suffered a hind-leg injury in the autumn
that kept him out of the Australian Cup and owner Lloyd Williams,
currently in Europe, confirmed Zipping’s retirement in a text
message to Melbourne’s Age newspaper.
Placed three times in the W S Cox Plate, Zipping retires the
provisions of AR.178B.
The legitimate indication for the use of the product Cidirol
is in synchronisation programmes for breeding cows and for
the treatment of anoestrus in cows. However, there have been
anecdotal reports of the off-label use of this product as an anabolic
agent in racehorses.
Trainers are reminded that the administration of oestradiol
prohibited substance to that horse.
There is no information available on the detection period of
oestradiol and/or oestradiol benzoate following the administration
of Cidirol to horses.
Even by their own lofty standards, the season just completed
has been a stellar one for the Darley team, writes Darryl
Sherer. A clean sweep of the Group 1 races with homebred
colts Sepoy (Elusive Quality) [125] and Helmet (Exceed And
Excel) [122] sees that pair the top two highest rated on ANZform’s
final juvenile standings and Darley also has the likes of Group 1
winner benfica (Lonhro) [116], Altar (Commands) [114] and free
Wheeling (Ad Valorem) [113p] in the top 20 rated two-year-olds.
Sepoy did it in the spring and then in the Autumn and he provides
the best form line throughout the year. His only defeat was at the
hands of the unbeaten Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) in the Todman
Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), where he has some legitimate reasons for
being beaten. The race was run in atrocious conditions, Sepoy was
racing right-handed for the first time and after a short let up following
his Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) success.
A strongly-made, handsome colt, Sepoy has been a model of
professionalism and his dominance in both the Blue Diamond and
Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) – the two premier juvenile
contests over 1200 metres in Australia, stamp him as the best of
his generation.
Pedigree wise he should get further than 1200 metres but
his racing style and physique suggest he might be more effective
sprinting than stretching out to 1600m – a distance his sire set a
world record for as an older horse.
Helmet has his foibles but his ability cannot be questioned. His
only defeat in five starts was on debut when he finished third to
Karuta Queen (Not A Single Doubt) after a chequered run in transit.
Returning after a spell he reeled off four wins, culminating in the
AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) where he ran about in
the straight and then in the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1) over 1600m
where he again ran erratically in the straight. An athletically made,
flashy looker, he should be open to further improvement, especially if
he can learn to run in a straight line.
It was one of the disappointments of the season Smart Missile
[121p] was not able to start in the Golden Slipper as he is clearly
a very smart colt and indeed, looks capable of further improvement
having raced just twice for victories in stakes races. A grand looker,
Smart Missile came from behind Sepoy in the Todman Stakes and
ran past him. If he can retain that level of form in his second season
then he can develop into a leading sprinter.
Whereas Sepoy dominated the colts, there was no female
counterpart. However, like Sepoy, Elite falls (More Than Ready) [117]
did it in two halves of the season, travelling to Melbourne to win the
valuable Inglis bonus race at Moonee Valley where she defeated
Masthead (Domesday). In the autumn she was in the first three in the
Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1200m) and Widden
Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and won the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
defeating Satin Shoes (Flying Spur) by a length and a quarter.
Pane In The Glass (Testa Rossa) [116] was admirably consistent
and she proved competitive against the colts in the autumn. The
Patinack filly won her first three races and then finished second or
third in the Champagne Stakes (beaten one length by Helmet) and
the AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes (to Helmet and Uate), the Magic Night
(Gr 3, 1200m) and Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).
Mosheen (Fastnet Rock) [115] only ran twice, winning on debut
at Caulfield with subsequent Listed winner City Of Song behind and
then running out of her skin when runner-up to Sepoy in the Golden
Slipper with Elite Falls in third.
As ever there are some interesting prospects that are lightly-
raced but look interesting prospects as three-year-olds.
Le Societe (Anabaa) [109p] ran some extraordinary times in
brushing aside inferior opposition in Melbourne, both times at
Sandown. Galah (Redoute’s Choice) [106] defeated a handy sort
in Queenian (Dubleo) when winning over 1400m at Rosehill in
June and this Redoute’s Choice colt out of Group 1 winner Rinky
Dink could easily progress to better things. In a similar vein,
Startreusse (Starcraft) [107] has been patiently handled by Chris
Waller. Unbeaten in two starts, Startreusse defeated subsequent
stakeswinner fontelina (Testa Rossa) on debut at Canterbury and
then defeated the equally promising Strike the Stars (Savabeel)
[104] when winning at Randwick on a bog in June. Manawanui
(Oratorio) [108p] looks a real prospect.
Third on debut to Do You Think (Starcraft) [114p] he then won
easily at Canterbury and finished his first season with an equally
comfortable defeat of Free Wheeling Ad Valorem [113p] over
1250m at Canterbury. Sabrage (104p) is a really attractive colt by
Charge Forward who won his only start over 1200m at Caulfield on
a Heavy track.
9 EUROPEAN ROUND UP
A
stunning and exciting week of action took place on
the South Downs last week at the summer festival of
Glorious Goodwood, while one of the all-time stars of
European racing continues to break records in France.
OLDER HORSES
GOLDIkOvA WINS HER 14TH GROUp ONE
Champion mare Goldikova (Anabaa) continues to break records.
A fourth consecutive win in the Prix Rothschild (Gr 1, 1600m) at
Deauville on Sunday was a record-breaking 14th victory at Group One
level for the Wertheimer homebred. This is the first time in France
that a Group One contest has been won by the same horse four years
in succession. This success also provided a personal landmark for
Goldikova’s regular pilot Olivier Peslier as he realised 100 Group One
wins in the saddle.
Freddy Head’s star mare was never threatened by runner-up
Sahpresa (Sahm) despite the winning margin of a neck and she now
heads for the Prix Jacques Le Marois (Gr 1, 1600m) back against
the colts.
MIDDAy WINS THIRD SUCCESSIvE NASSAU
Midday (Oasis Dream) became the first filly to win the Nassau
Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) three times, as she proved too strong for the
four-time Group One winning filly Snow Fairy (Intikhab), who is yet to
return to her best following an injury setback over the winter. This
hat-trick of wins for Midday provided her trainer Sir Henry Cecil with
his eighth victory in the race and took Midday through the £2 million
prize money barrier. The Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) is next on the
agenda as Midday bids to add to her already impressive tally of six
Group One wins, including last year’s Yorkshire Oaks.
DURbAN THUNDER DENIES FAMOUS NAME’S
bID FOR A GROUp ONE
Despite having won eight Group Three races in a wonderful career, the
Dermot Weld trained Famous Name (Dansili) has never won at Group
Two or Group One level. His latest attempt to succeed at the top level
was again thwarted by the local horse Durban Thunder (Samum) in
Sunday’s Grosser Dallmayr-Preis (Gr 1, 2000m) at Munich. This was
a first Group One victory for the front-running Torsten Mundry trained
colt who is the third Group One winner sired by his sire Samum
(Monsun).
MELbOURNE CUp pOSSIbLES FIGHT OUT
GLORIOUS STAkES
Luca Cumani will again try to capture that elusive first winner of
the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) with Drunken Sailor (Tendulkar)
following the six-year-old’s gallant success in Friday’s Glorious Stakes
(Gr 3, 1m4f). Produced with a perfectly timed challenge by jockey
Kieren Fallon, Drunken Sailor held on by a head from fellow possible
Melbourne Cup runner Harris Tweed (Hernando) to win his first race
in Group company.
OpINION pOLL LEADS HOME GODOLpHIN
QUINELLA IN GOODWOOD CUp
Godolphin also appear to have several interesting possible
contenders for the first Tuesday in November, notably Lost In The
Moment (Danehill Dancer), following his improved performance on his
first attempt at a staying distance when finishing a staying-on second
to fellow Godolphin inmate Opinion Poll (Halling) in last Thursday’s
Goodwood Cup (Gr 2, 2m). Lost In The Moment may first head to the
Ebor Handicap (1m6f) at York in mid-August, while Opinion Poll will
be targeted at the new British Champions Long Distance Cup (Gr 3,
2m) at the revamped Champions Day at Ascot in mid-October where
the likely soft ground will be to his liking.
MASAMAH CONTINUES HIS RISE THROUGH
THE SpRINTING RANkS
An improving sprinter is hard to beat, as Masamah (Exceed And
Excel) proved with a good display of raw speed in Thursday’s King
George Stakes (Gr 2, 5f). Having won a Listed race narrowly from
Amour Propre (Paris House) at York in early July, Masamah again
beat that rival into second at Goodwood last week, but this time by
a length and three quarters. A bid for the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1,
5f) at York in mid-August is the next logical step for Kevin Ryan’s
five year-old speedster.
MEEzNAH RETURNS TO HER bEST
Since finishing runner-up to Snow Fairy (Intikhab) in the Oaks (Gr
1, 1m4f) at Epsom last year, although subsequently disqualified
due to a technicality, Meeznah (Dynaformer) has failed to attain
that level of form. However, all the old sparkle seemed to be back
as she powered away from a good field in the Lillie Langtry Stakes
(Gr 3, 1m6f) at Glorious Goodwood. This first Group race victory
sets up David Lanigan’s star inmate for what should prove a fruitful
autumn ahead.
CHACHAMAIDEE ON THE Up
Sir Henry Cecil is once again illustrating why he is universally regarded
as a master trainer of fillies with the progressive but highly strung
four-year-old Chachamaidee (Footstepsinthesand). Having registered
a career best when finishing runner-up in the Windsor Forest
Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Royal Ascot behind Lolly For Dolly (Oratorio),
Chachamaidee stepped up again to run out a convincing winner of
last Friday’s Oak Tree Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Glorious Goodwood. The
well-bred filly, who at 135,000gns remains the fourth highest priced
yearling ever sired by Footstepsinthesand (Giant’s Causeway), could
well make her mark at Group One level before the end of the year.
pINk SyMpHONy ENjOyS THE MOvE
ACROSS THE IRISH SEA
On her first start for Irish trainer David Wachman, having moved from
English handler Paul Cole, Pink Symphony (Montjeu) made her first
Irish effort a winning one in the Give Thanks Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at
Cork on Sunday. This was a first Group success for this regally bred
filly who was purchased for 400,000gns at the Tattersalls October
Yearling Sale in 2008. She is the 93rd individual worldwide Group
race winner for her sire Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells).
THREE yEAR-OLDS
SUpERb FRANkEL pOWERS TO vICTORy
The much-anticipated ‘Duel on the Downs’ between Europe’s two
best milers proved anything but a duel, as the magnificent Frankel
(Galileo) proved far too strong for Canford Cliffs (Tagula). Gifted an
easy lead, Tom Queally wound up the pace aboard the unbeaten
2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner throughout the final six furlongs
and soon had his three opponents in trouble. As Frankel powered
past the winning line, a possibly below-par Canford Cliffs was
hanging, having been taken out of his comfort zone by the cruising
speed of his younger rival. Racing fans hope for a clash with So You
Think (High Chaparral) in the Juddmonte International (Gr 1, 1m2f)
at York, but it seems that a more likely scenario is that Frankel will
be given a break prior to the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) on
Champions Day at Ascot in mid-October.
STRONG SUIT pROvES DIFFERENT CLASS
Strong Suit (Rahy) is a very smart colt at seven furlongs as he
showed when successful in the Jersey Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Royal
Ascot. Back to his favourite trip following a narrow defeat in
the Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1600m) in France last month, Richard
Hannon’s colt cruised through last Tuesday’s Lennox Stakes (Gr
2, 7f) at Glorious Goodwood to defeat a strong field in effortless
fashion. It is surely only a matter of time before the talented three-
year-old breaks his Group One duck with the Prix de la Foret (Gr 1,
1400m) at Longchamp on Arc Day in early October mooted as the
long-term target.
NAMIbIAN CONTINUES HIS RISE
The Gordon Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) is a tried and tested trial for the St
Leger (Gr 1, 1m6f) and that final Classic of the season is now the
obvious target for this year’s winner Namibian (Cape Cross). Mark
Johnston’s three-year-old showed guts and determination to win the
Queen’s Vase (Gr 3, 2m) at Royal Ascot and again utilised those
attributes to fend off the promising Fiorente (Monsun) close home at
Glorious Goodwood last Tuesday.
DALARUA SCRApES HOME
The promising Dalarua (King’s Best) was successful at stakes level
for the first time in a blanket finish for Saturday’s Prix de Psyche (Gr
3, 2000m) at Deauville. Having finished midfield when highly tried
in the Prix Saint-Alary (Gr 1, 2000m) on just her third career outing,
Stephane Wattel’s three-year-old filly was desperately unlucky in the
Prix Chloe (Gr 3, 1800m) when very short of room, but she made no
mistake in Saturday’s contest as finished with a race surge to get her
head in front on the line. The Haras de la Perelle homebred provides
her sire King’s Best (Kingmambo) with a 38th stakeswinner.
TWO yEAR-OLDS
HARbOUR WATCH pROvES HIS CLASS
Short-priced favourite Harbour Watch (Acclamation) lived up to his tall
reputation with a decisive success in the Richmond Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at
Glorious Goodwood. Unbeaten in his three career starts to date, the
Richard Hannon trained juvenile now heads the ante-post betting for
next season’s 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and cotinues a good season
for his sire Acclamation (Royal Applause) who has already sired four
individual two year-old stakes winners this season. Harbour Watch
has an array of exciting possible targets for the remainder of the year.
CHANDLERy GETS HIS REvENGE ON RED DUkE
A well-judged front-running ride by Richard Hughes allowed Chandlery
(Choisir) to take revenge on his Newmarket conqueror Red Duke
(Hard Spun) in Wednesday’s Vintage Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Glorious
Goodwood and provide his sire Choisir (Danehill Dancer) with a first
Group race winner of 2011. Red Duke struggled to find racing room
at a crucial time and had insufficient time to get any nearer than third,
but the Superlative Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) winner is likely to prove a very
different proposition in a more strongly run contest. The Dewhurst
Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) may see a third re-match of these two colts later
this season.
REQUINTO pROvES DANSILI’S vERSATILITy
It is a case of like mother like son with Tuesday’s Molecomb Stakes
(Gr 3, 5f) winner Requinto (Dansili). In a display of speed very
reminiscent of his dam Damson’s (Entrepreneur) victories as a two
year-old in the 2004 Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Royal Ascot and
the Phoenix Stakes (Gr 1, 6f). Requinto is yet another example of the
fantastic versatility of her sire Dansili (Danehill), who continues to sire
top performers at all distances.
DAbIRSIM REMAINS UNbEATEN
The unbeaten Dabirsim (Hat Trick) made the step from French
provincial racing into the Prix de Cabourg (Gr 3, 1200m) at Deauville
in fine style on Sunday. Running down the experienced British raider
B Fifty Two (Dark Angel) with a smart turn of foot, the Christophe
Ferland trained colt marked himself down as one of the leading sprint
juveniles in France and is now set for the Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m).
He is the first stakes winner for his sire Hat Trick (Sunday Silence)
who stands at Walmac Farm in Kentucky, USA.
Strategic Maneuver (Royal Academy) showed natural speed
at two, winning his only run at two by three lengths at
Randwick over 1100m in 1:04.13, coming home over the
last 600m in 34.49.
After such an impressive debut performance, his
Queensland Winter Carnival preparation was mapped out
but unfortunately these plans never came to fruition with
the good looking son of Royal Academy developing quarter
cracks which kept him off the racecourse for almost three
years.
Trainer Gai Watershouse said after his debut win:
“Strategic Maneuver is very exciting, he’s a stakes-horse in
the making – I have no doubts about that.”
Strategic Maneuver was retired after his second and
fi nal start as a fi ve-year-old, in February 2011. Strategic
Maneuver is by the same sire of Bel Esprit in Royal Academy
and is also bred on the same cross, with his second dam,
the stakes performer Madayao, being by Vain.
Strategic Maneuver is from the family of multiple
stakeswinners Proud Player (Squill) and Royal Courtship
(Royal Academy). His breeder’s Gooree Pastoral have
retained some shares in Strategic Maneuver.
“Strategic Maneuver was the fastest colt I’ve trained
since Dance Hero and Sebring,” Waterhouse said. “He
possessed a wonderful cruising speed and was one of the
nicest looking horses in the yard.”
He retires to Bullarook Stud at a fee of A$4,400.
