Introduction to the scientifi c study <strong>of</strong> the biological, physiological, and neuroanatomical<br />

foundations <strong>of</strong> behavior and mental processes through discussion <strong>of</strong> research <strong>of</strong><br />

fundamental concepts and issues in psychology. The structure and functions <strong>of</strong> the brain<br />

and the nervous system and their effects on human behavior are studied.<br />

attitudes; interactions within groups; and the psychology <strong>of</strong> conformity, obedience,<br />

and prejudice.<br />

Examines the etiology, assessment and classifi cation, diagnosis, and treatment <strong>of</strong> the<br />

major psychological/psychiatric disorders. Topics include the history <strong>of</strong> abnormal<br />

psychology, as well as anxiety, mood, personality, dissociative, somat<strong>of</strong>orm, cognitive<br />

disorders, sexual dysfunctions, addiction, schizophrenia, and disorders <strong>of</strong> childhood and<br />

adolescence. This course will provide an introduction to the Diagnostic and Statistical<br />

Manual <strong>of</strong> Mental Disorders (DSM-IV).<br />

Individual psychological development from conception to death, including physical,<br />

cognitive and psychosocial aspects. Major theories and research methodologies are<br />

introduced. Family, peer, education and social infl uences on intelligence, gender, personality<br />

and relationships are explored. Practical applications are emphasized. Special emphasis is<br />

given to social and cultural infl uences.<br />

sexual identity: sex organs and their functions: sexual myths and fallacies; sexual dysfunction<br />

and variant behavior.<br />
