Editorial
Dear Reader
Welcome to M-Industry. It gives me great pleasure to present
this brochure which will give you some insight into our
In dustry Group.
M-Industry comprises 18 Swiss and three foreign business
enterprises which together manufacture over 20,000
high-quality food and near-food products, offering the best
value for money and a traditional and deeply ingrained
appreciation of Swiss quality. For M-Industry, Swissness is
more than simply a declaration of origin. Swissness is our
commitment to optimum quality and reliability.
M-Industry is owned by Migros, the leading Swiss retailer.
Migros is also our largest customer, because over 90 percent
of the products in the Migros range are own brands. In addition,
M-Industry supplies other customers within Switzerland
and exports its quality products to more than 50 countries,
where they are also sold and distributed – most of them as
private labels – by top international retail groups and specialist
markets.
Over the decades, M-Industry has built up a unique expertise
in the development, production and marketing of private
label concepts. Today, we are able to react quickly and flexibly
to the demands and needs of our customers, and
offer them customized solutions. Our employees are passionately
committed to working with their customers in
the continuous development of food and near-food product
ranges. Together, we set the trends and develop new
products that inspire our customers.
Innovation is one of the principal driving forces for our
business. Every year, we develop several hundred new products,
including “new-to-the-world products”. To continue
to keep up with the best in the world, we have a team of 200
or so research and development staff working on the technologies,
concepts and products of tomorrow.
4

In everything we do, quality and reliability are what we believe
in above all else. But they are not the only values that are
important for M-Industry: solidarity with Switzerland and a
responsible and sustainable approach to the environment and
the resources are also part of our ethos. We are constantly
investing in improving energy efficiency in our production; we
guarantee the traceability of raw materials; and we are
winning customers over with products that are kind to the
environment.
We also act responsibly towards our employees. Our companies
invest a great deal in secure jobs and offer aboveaverage
social benefits. A good working environment is just
as important as the provision of interesting development
and career possibilities at all levels.
M
for Migros
The owner and main customer of M-Industry is the Migros
Group, Migros for short. The company was founded in 1925.
Since then it has become an established part of Swiss
society, and plays an active role in shaping the country’s
future. Migros is not just Switzerland’s largest retail enterprise;
with more than 80,000 employees it is also the country’s
biggest private employer. In 2012 the Migros Group generated
sales of around CHF 25 billion.
The Migros Group comprises ten regional Cooperatives
with over two million members, together with a number of
companies and foundations. Key business areas, aside
from the key cooperative based retail and industry are trade
retail (Denner, the Swiss discounter, Globus, the department
store chain, etc.), travel retail (Hotelplan, Interhome,
etc.) and financial services (Migros Bank).
Strong own-brand policy
The cooperative retail business is characterized by a
strong own-brand policy. Over 90 percent of the products
sold are own brands, the majority of which are manufactured
by M-Industry.
Committed to sustainability
Coporate’s activities have play major role over the year building
values around sustainability, which embody ethical
considerations and assume social responsibility from the time
the company was founded. Every year, for example, a fixed
per centage (over CHF 100 million a year) of the sales revenue
of the Migros Cooperatives is set aside for cultural and social
activities, therefore, becoming the largest private sponsor
of cultural events in Switzerland. Around half of this “Culture
Percentage” goes to the Migros Club schools, Switzerland’s
largest adult education and training institutions.
8

Milestones
to becoming
an industrial group
The foundations for M-Industry were laid by Migros’ founder
Gottlieb Duttweiler as early as 1928. His idea centered around
eliminating brokerage and selling products at attractive
prices. In doing so he met with some resistance, and many
manufacturers refused to supply their products to Migros.
This boycott proved to be the defining point for the future of
the young company. It marked the beginning of Migros’
own-brand policy, which today still represents a key feature
differentiating Migros from its competitors. By establishing its
own industrial branch and buying up various factories, Migros
was soon able to build up its comprehensive and competitive
range of products, which enabled it to win the trust and
acceptance of its customers.
Growth at home and abroad
Over the years, M-Industry has developed into an efficient
industrial group, and continues to be committed to growth.
In Switzerland, it focuses mainly on potential catering
services and fast moving consumer goods, as well as within
the Migros Group. Sales & marketing structures in its principle
markets – Germany, the UK, France, Austria and North
America – are aimed at strengthening M-Industry abroad.
In both the USA and Canada, a subsidiary has been opened
for that purpose. Strategic purchases have recently been
made with the acquisition of Gastina, based in Vorarlberg
(Austria), which specializes in ready meals and fresh dough
products; or of the UK company Hallam Beauty Limited
(now Mibelle Limited) by Mibelle, which has enabled Mibelle
to expand its strong position in the manufacture and
marketing of cosmetics and hygiene products internationally.
9

Globalisation
Surely everyone knows Swiss chocolate, Appenzeller cheese
and Bündnerfleisch (air-dried meat). These Swiss favorites
are extremely popular elsewhere as well: M-Industry exports
these and many other specialties to over 50 countries.
Chocolat Frey, for example, produces more than one-third of
its total volume for export. Its customers appreciate the wide
range, excellent quality and good value for money. Foreign
sales of cosmetics, hygiene and personal care products by
Mibelle AG Cosmetics make up more than half of their total.
Many of the active ingredients developed by it are processed
by leading cosmetics manufacturers.
In its international business, M-Industry shows its particular
strength in the tailor-made development and production of
individual private label ranges. As a key supplier, it can
develop entire private label ranges for its customers abroad,
profiting from its many years of experience with Migros.
Many of the concepts developed by M-Industry have been
successfully launched onto the market through Migros
the retailer.
One-stop solution
Private labels are gaining ground around the world, not only
because they offer advantages in terms of price, but also they
create differentiation. In M-Industry, customers will find a
competent partner with a comprehensive range. They do not
have to assess a different supplier for each type of product;
they are able to rely on one partner who understands their
needs and requirements, whilst developing and producing
cross-range tailor-made solutions. Thanks to its size,
M-Industry is in a position to supply its customers efficiently,
flexibly and quickly with large volumes.
In order to respond even better to the wishes of its customers,
M-Industry is continuously expanding its marketing
organization. In France, the USA and Canada, subsidiaries
ensure that M-Industry has its finger on the pulse of the
markets, are aware of local needs and can develop solutions
quickly. Because of its local presence, it identifies trends
early on and develops concepts and innovations that adapt
to those trends.
10

SUSTAINABLE
APPROACH
Adopting a responsible and sustainable approach is a
fundamental principle for M-Industry. For Gottlieb Duttweiler
himself, the founder of Migros, it was always more than just
profit. People were at the heart of it all for him and his
business, keeping the well being of society in mind. Today,
these values remain very much at the heart of the corporate
culture at Migros, and therefore of M-Industry too. M-Industry
actively advocates fair working conditions, appropriate regard
for animal welfare, and an effective protection of the environment
and global climate. Its production is energy efficient, the
traceability of raw materials and products is guaranteed, and
its processes are transparent. The majority of its goods are
even transported by rail.
Ecological and social
For the sourcing and manufacture of its products, M-Industry
ensures that high ecological, social and ethical standards
are maintained. Its businesses, for example, produce ecological
products that are certified in accordance with the strict
Bio Suisse guidelines, or for the Migros TerraSuisse label,
which gives special consideration to aspects including
biodiversity. M-Industry is also making a name for itself with
its particularly energy-efficient – and thus climate-friendly –
innovations.
Social and ecological standards are reflected at M-Industry
by Max Havelaar and UTZ Certified fair trade products. The
Business Social Compliance Initiative, BSCI for short, follows
similar criteria. The BSCI was initiated by Migros and
advocates sound working conditions among all its suppliers
around the world. All M-Industry suppliers are bound by this
initiative. M-Industry also promotes the environmentally
compatible cultivation of palm oil and soy. To this end, Migros
was a cofounder, together with the WWF, of the Roundtable
on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Migros is also a member
of the Round Table on Responsible Soy Association (RTRS).
High priority for food safety
M-Industry also demonstrates responsibility when it comes
to food safety. All M-Industry businesses are certified under
one of the internationally recognized standards by the Global
Food Safety Initiative. This improves food safety and raises
levels of confidence among customers.
11

An Attractive
Employer
With some 11,000 employees, including 415 trainees in more
than 20 trades and professions, M-Industry is a significant
employer in Switzerland. Marketing, human resources, procurement
managers and sales managers alike: there are
positions for these as well as logistic specialists, truck drivers,
laboratory technicians, bakers and foremen – just to name
a few.
Every year, M-Industry trains hundreds of apprentices, and
offers interesting career opportunities for graduates. These
include a two-year cross-company trainee program which
provides a comprehensive insight into highly diverse sectors
and processes involved in food and near-food production.
Because of the diversity of its business enterprises and job
profiles, M-Industry offers excellent development opportunities.
Career planning is actively monitored and instituted.
Power of innovation – benefits the environment as well
With its excellent knowledge of the market, Aproz recognizes
Riseria Taverne SA is Switzerland’s largest and most productive
rice-processing company.
Exclusive varieties of rice and individual product lines
Riseria sets the standard – with a comprehensive range of
rice, top-class quality and personalised service. Riseria
develops, produces and packs exclusive varieties of rice and
individual product lines for its major customers. These
are sold to end consumers in Switzerland and other countries
under the La Riseria brand or as private labels.
Ultra-modern and flexible
An ultra-modern infrastructure gives Riseria the flexibility it
needs to meet specific customer requirements on time.
The company operates silos in which up to 10,000 tonnes of
rice are stored, three full processing lines and a rice mill, as
well as a laboratory for continuous quality controls.
Full use of raw materials
Riseria has a responsibility: It is consistent in its avoidance of
genetically modified rice and in using up 100% of the raw
materials by processing waste products into animal feed and
rice flour. Wherever possible, Riseria buys European rice,
helping to protect the environment by using short transport
routes.
