Viral STD's
1) HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
About 20 million people currently have the HPV virus and over 50% of sexually active
people will get HPV in their lifetimes. HPV infection may lead to genital warts, but not
always depending on the strain of the virus. The HPV vaccine, Gardasil, is only effective
in preventing a few ofthe strains of HPV so it doesn't provide 100% protection.
HPV can cause a higher incidence of cervical cancer in women.
HPV is often undetected until you have an outbreak of warts.

infected with genital herpes (Flernlnq, 1997).
3) Hepatitis B is also a dangerous viral STD, but it's incidence rate is declining
and there is an effective vaccine for Hep. B
4) HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
Bacterial STD's
1) Chlamydia is the bacterial STD that is the fastest growing. By far, there are
more Chlamydia cases reported! each year (over 1 million new cases in 2007)
than any other STD. It can lead to infertility if untreated.
2) Gonorrhea- In 2007,355,991 cases of gonorrhea were reported in the
United States
3) Syphilis- III 200i', 11,466 cases of P&S syphilis (primary and secondary)
PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) is a common condition that comes after an untreated
Chlamydia or gonorrhea infection. Can cause a great deal of damage to the reproductive
system.
