Extended Day<br />

Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK)<br />

<strong>Osceola</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>School</strong>s’ Voluntary Prekindergarten program offers quality PreK education.<br />

This half-day or full-school-day program is available at various schools throughout the county.<br />

The VPK program is committed to preparing your child for success in school. The purpose of<br />

the VPK program is to increase the opportunities to help each child become a successful<br />

learner and, ultimately, a productive member of society. VPK is available to all four-year-old<br />

children (children must be four years old by September 1st of that school year). The half-day,<br />

school-year program is free. Parent fees may apply for the full-day school year program.<br />

What Children Learn in Our VPK Program<br />

• Literacy skills (letter knowledge, phonological<br />

awareness, writing, oral language, and vocabulary)<br />

• Math • Science • Social Studies • Social Skills<br />

Extended Day<br />

The Extended Day Program is a before- and after-school program designed to enrich<br />

children’s lives educationally, socially, culturally, emotionally, and physically in a safe<br />

and familiar setting. The program is open on regular school days, early-release<br />

Wednesdays, teacher work days, some holiday breaks, and summer breaks.<br />

All children enrolled in <strong>Osceola</strong> <strong>County</strong> schools in Grades PreK-5 may attend with no<br />

discrimination to sex, race, or handicap. Each child must be able to function in a<br />

group setting without additional individual supervision.<br />

Program hours are 6:30 a.m. until school starts and after school until 6:00 p.m.<br />

Activities include arts and crafts, music, games, field trips, homework assistance,<br />

tutoring (available at some sites), sports, and story-telling. A low<br />

staff/child ratio and nutritious snacks are also features of the program.<br />
