Responsibilities<br />

Under Florida law, you have<br />

the right to...<br />

• receive clear information about what is required for your<br />

child(ren) to be promoted to the next grade.<br />

• be notified of your child(ren)’s progress toward achieving state and<br />

district expectations for academic proficiency.<br />

• be notified of your right to participate in the development of<br />

academic improvement plans.<br />

• receive assessment results, including student progress reports,<br />

report cards, and end–of–year status.<br />

• be notified of school accountability and school improvement<br />

rating reports, including school grading system and district<br />

performance grades.<br />

• receive information regarding teacher qualifications.<br />

• receive communication regarding instructional materials.<br />

• be notified regarding rights related to student records (access,<br />

waiver of access, challenge and hearing, and privacy).<br />

• receive a copy of the <strong>District</strong> Code of Student Conduct.<br />

Opportunities For Parental Participation<br />

When children, parents, and educators<br />

work as a team, students succeed.<br />

<strong>Osceola</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>School</strong>s have high expectations for their students and<br />

parents. Research shows that students benefit from parent involvement<br />

through higher grades and test scores, better attendance and more homework<br />

completed, a more positive attitude and better behavior, and a higher<br />

graduation rate at the secondary level. We expect parents to be actively<br />

involved in their child’s education.<br />

Join the team by:<br />

• becoming familiar with school goals and being supportive of those goals;<br />

• being a chaperone for a field trip;<br />

• participating in the <strong>School</strong> Advisory Council (SAC) meetings;<br />

• being involved by volunteering in your child’s school and classroom;<br />

• supporting and attending school functions;<br />

• emphasizing the value of learning;<br />

• monitoring your child’s activities at home and in the school; and<br />

• reviewing and contributing to the Title I <strong>School</strong> or <strong>District</strong> Parent<br />

Involvement Plan (PIP), if your child attends a Title I <strong>School</strong>. The PIP is<br />

available at the school’s website. The <strong>District</strong> Title I PIP is available at the<br />

Support and Attend:<br />

• school functions;<br />

• educational activities;<br />

• parent meetings and social events;<br />

• PTO and PTA events;<br />

• Parent/teacher conferences;<br />

• Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings; and<br />

• Academic Improvement Plan (AIP) or Progress Monitoring<br />

Plan (PMP) meetings.<br />

• being a good role model.<br />

• discussing your child’s school work daily.<br />

• emphasizing good work habits.<br />

• reading to your children and letting them read to you daily.<br />

• ensuring regular and punctual attendance.<br />

Monitor your child’s progress by:<br />

• becoming familiar with your child’s teacher and his/her<br />

behavior plan;<br />

• monitoring your child’s activities at school;<br />

• corresponding with your child’s teacher;<br />

• reviewing progress reports and report cards;<br />

• attending teacher conferences; and<br />

• reviewing and discussing daily work and homework assignments.<br />
