– 66 – H O M E & G A R D E N NATURALLY SPEAKING: Plan Ahead for Next Year’s Garden by June A. Liardi January is almost here. Another new year; where will it take us? Hope it is all sunshine and flowers for all of us. After the holidays, don’t get rid of all your fresh evergreen arrangements just yet, update them. Start by removing any holiday colors like red, green, silver and gold. Buy some fresh flowers in pretty colors like pink, yellow, purple or orange. Add them to the evergreen and pines. Get some small vases, tea cups or other containers, cut some flowers and greens in small pieces to fit. Put them all around the house. A hint of spring here and there. Revitalize your outdoor greens in the same way. Cut or buy some fresh greens and instead of adding fresh flowers, add a bright-colored bow to perk up the bleak landscape. The garden catalogs are coming in now so snuggle in and plan that beautiful garden. Give the children a few and let them get excited about planning a garden too. It is a good idea to plan it out, whether you are thinking of a garden the length of a yard stick or the length of your yard. Be realistic about how many plants you can fit in the space you choose.
