THE BEST DVDS
APRIL ’10
LEO’S ROOM
A quiet, gently-paced,
but wholly credible and
touching coming-out story
from Uruguay. Student Leo
is struggling to accept his
true nature. Dumped by his
girlfriend, he begins to explore
his sexuality, using internet
chat rooms to meet up with
men. Featuring a tender performance from the handsome
Martin Rodriguez, this subtitled offering touchingly follows
Leo as he comes to terms with his feelings within a Latin
American society not quite as open or tolerant as our own.
COLLEGE BOYS LIVE
A fascinating documentary
about a tawdry subject
matter, College Boys Live
looks at life inside a ‘webcam
house’ – a residence in Florida
where a group of young
gay men allow their lives
to be constantly filmed by
webcams for the privilege
of paying members. Some of the boys have a healthy
perspective on the experience, while others – clearly come
from more damaged backgrounds.
DID YOU HEAR ABOUT
THE MORGANS
Part rom-com and part
crime caper, Hugh Grant and
Sarah Jessica Parker star as
the titular Mr and Mrs – a
couple who have forgotten
the reason why they fell
in love. When they end up
exiled in a witness protection
programme, after witnessing a murder, they struggle
to adapt to their new surroundings but find themselves
united for the first time in years.
OUT: 24 MAY

NOWHERE BOY
Set in Liverpool in 1955, artist
Sam Taylor-Wood’s acclaimed
biopic of the teenage John
Lennon is a surprisingly
assured, if not somewhat
conventional, cinematic
offering. Avoiding the Beatles
altogether, this is more a
tug-of-war melodrama, with
the teenage Lennon bouncing between uptight Aunt Mimi
(Kristen Scott Thomas) and Aunt Julia (Ann Marie Duff)
– his actual, biological mother. It’s held together by a
credible performance from newcomer Aaron Johnson.
