VIENNA’S LIFE BALL
The 18th edition of the Life Ball, possibly Europe’s largest
annual AIDS/HIV charity event, will return to Vienna on
17 July 2010. Each year, some 40,000 locals, accompanied
by the international media and special guests, take part
in the celebration. Since its first outing in 1993, the Life
Ball has had the likes of Bill Clinton and Liza Minnelli as
guests. The grand opening includes musical performances,
with previous performers including Grace Jones and the
Vienna Symphony Orchestra. There will also be speeches
(e.g. Sir Elton John in 2006), and, finally, a fashion show
(e.g. Jean-Paul Gautier in 1995). This year’s line-up is yet
to be announced, but you can expect something very
special. After the glamorous opening ceremony, the
even more glamorous ball takes place inside historic
Vienna City Hall, with more performances and surprises.
GAY BOUTIQUE HOTEL
FOR NEW YORK
It’s been announced that New
York is to receive its first ‘gay
boutique hotel’. Following
the trend for some businesses
– eager to chase the pink
pound – to dub themselves as ‘gay-friendly’, The Out
NYC is billing itself as “hetero-friendly”.
“In the old days there were straight hotels, and operators
decided to make them gay-friendly,” said Ian Reisner,
head of Parkview Developers, the firm behind the plan,
told the NY Daily News. “I’m taking that concept and
turning it upside down.”
The $20million project will see the total refurbishment
of an existing building at 508 W. 42nd Street, in the city’s
Hell’s Kitchen district. When completed, it will offer 123
guest rooms, a gym, spa, nightclub and restaurant.
