Niyat (intention). he makes intention of performing<br />

. Namaz in some such words as: "I purpose to offer to<br />

God with a sincere heart this morning (or as the case<br />

may be). with my face toward the Qibla. two (or as the<br />

case may be) rak'ats (portions. bows) of prayer farg<br />

(or Sunnat or Nafil as the case may be)."<br />

Takbir-i-Tal;lIima. (The word Takbir means to say Allaho-Akbar,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> the phrase, Takbir-i-Tal;lIima means<br />

Takbir of Prohibition). This first Takbir is called<br />

Takbir of prohibition because itprohibits the worshipper<br />

from saying or doing anything extraneous to<br />

Namaz. The worshipper says Allah-o-Akbar, God is<br />

most great, <strong>and</strong> raises his h<strong>and</strong>s to the height of his<br />

shoulders, with his thumbs touching the lobes of his<br />

ears, the fingers separated from each other. Then he<br />

goes through the following order of the prayer-ser­<br />

VIce:<br />

i. Qiyam : St<strong>and</strong>ing Position. The worshipper<br />

places his h<strong>and</strong>s under his navel. putting the<br />

palm of the right h<strong>and</strong> on the back of the<br />

left, stretching the fore <strong>and</strong> the middle finger,<br />

<strong>and</strong> seizing the wrist of the left h<strong>and</strong> with<br />

the thumb <strong>and</strong> little finger.<br />

Of the four orthodox schools of the Surinis<br />

the l;ianafis place their right h<strong>and</strong> upon<br />

the left below the navel, while the other<br />

three place their h<strong>and</strong>s on their breasts. The<br />

Wahabis also do like the non-l;ianafis. The<br />

Shi'as keep their h<strong>and</strong>s on either side. The<br />

women, in all the sects. keep their h<strong>and</strong>s on<br />

their breasts.<br />

St<strong>and</strong>ing in this position the following prayers<br />

are recited:<br />

1. Subl;1an: Prayer of praise; "Holiness to<br />

Thee. 0 God! And praise be to Thee!<br />

Great is Thy name! Great is Thy<br />

Majesty! There is no deity but Thee'"<br />

The Shi'as omit this prayer.<br />

2. Ta'awwudh, or A'udhubillah, which runs<br />

as follows:<br />

"I seek refuge with God from Satan the<br />

pelted."<br />

3. Tasmiyyah:<br />

"In the name of God. the compassionate.<br />

the merciful."<br />

4. The Fatil;1a, the first chapter of the<br />

Qur'an.<br />

5. The recitation of a small chapter or any<br />

short passage from the Qur'an consisting<br />

of not less than three verses.<br />

ii. Ruku'. the Bowing: The worshipper lets go his<br />

h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> inclines the upper part of his body<br />

so as to bring it in a horizontal position <strong>and</strong><br />

places his h<strong>and</strong>s upon his knees; this is done<br />

in the following order:<br />

(a) Takbir-i-Ruku', the Takbir of Bowing:<br />

It means to say Allah-o-Akbar, while<br />

making an inclination of the head <strong>and</strong><br />

body.<br />

(b) Tasbil;1-i-Ruku', the Praise of Bowing:<br />

while in the position of Bowing the<br />

worshipper repeats the following prayer<br />

three or five times:<br />

"Praised be my Lord. the exalted one <strong>and</strong><br />

glory be to Him."
