CHAPTER 1.<br />
The Foundations of Faith.<br />
ISLAM is the name of the religion founded by Muhammad.<br />
The word is derived from Slm to resign, surrender,<br />
submit oneself, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Islam</strong> irs infinitive form means the act<br />
of submission <strong>and</strong> of resignation of oneself. One who<br />
professes <strong>Islam</strong> is a Muslim (pI. Muslimin), resigned.<br />
According to the interpretation of the modern Muhammadans<br />
the word <strong>Islam</strong> also means the religion of peace.<br />
It is said to be the religion of all the prophets from Adam<br />
down to MuQ.ammad. The true religion with Allah is<br />
<strong>Islam</strong> (3: 17), "He who desireth any other religion than<br />
<strong>Islam</strong> that religion will not be accepted of him <strong>and</strong> in the<br />
next world he shall be lost (3: 79)."<br />
The following terms are also used to designate<br />
religion:-<br />
1. Din: means religion as it st<strong>and</strong>s in relation to<br />
God.<br />
2. Millat: means religion in relation to prophets.<br />
3. Madhhab: means religion in relation to founders<br />
of religious system of <strong>Islam</strong>.<br />
Muslim doctors treat of the various subjects of <strong>Islam</strong><br />
under two general divisions:-<br />
1. The Theoretical or Dogmatical part. which<br />
deals with the articles of faith, foundations<br />
ofreligion (u~iilu'd-din), the Science of the<br />
Unity of the Godhead (,Ilmu't-TawQ.id),<br />
the Science of the Articles of <strong>Belief</strong>,or<br />
Dogmas ('Ilmu'l-'Aqii'id) <strong>and</strong> the Scholastic<br />
Theology ('Ilmu'l-Kaliim).
