Providing exceptional public service means
ensuring that services are accessible to all
members of our community. In 2011 the
Town continued to demonstrate its
commitment to providing access and
eliminating barriers to service for persons
with disabilities with the publication of our
2011/2012 Accessibility Plan.
This document outlines our strategy to
prevent and remove barriers and to meet the
requirements of both the Accessibility for
Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and
the Ontarians with Disabilities Act (ODA).
As part of Accessibility Plan implementation we:
Community Volunteer - RH Mobility
Provided accessible customer service training for all part-time and full-time
staff and volunteers.
Implemented UbiDuo, a communications device that enables people with
hearing disabilities to converse directly with Town staff.
Introduced BrowseAloud, a free online application that can make websites
more accessible for those with visual impairments and literacy difficulties.
Expanded accessibility links on the Town’s website, www.richmondhill.ca.
The Town also contributes to the Richmond Hill
Mobility Accessibility Foundation (RH Mobility)
through the Disabled Parking Reserve By-Law.
50% of the fine associated with a disabled
parking space violation is placed in the reserve
and is used for mobility initiatives throughout
Richmond Hill. Some of these initiatives include:
Crosby Park - Richmond Hill’s First Fully Accessible Park
Support for accessible parks and playgrounds.
Accessible fitness equipment for community
centres.
Subsidized fitness memberships for people
with a disability.
Adaptable devices programs for consumers
and businesses.
