“Get out of <strong>the</strong> new one if you can’t lend your hand”<br />
2006 was a banner year for <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h and we knew that as that year came to a close, we we<strong>re</strong> poised for ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
amazing year of accomplishments in 2007. But never could we have imagined <strong>the</strong> extent of <strong>the</strong> overwhelming success<br />
that <strong>the</strong> organization enjoyed in ’07. By nearly every standard, <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h g<strong>re</strong>w: members, money raised, profile,<br />
involvement in festivals, diversity of a<strong>rt</strong>ist pa<strong>rt</strong>ners and audience <strong>re</strong>ached, substantive projects advanced, grant<br />
applications and grants awarded – all expectations we<strong>re</strong> exceeded. With only one full-time paid employee and<br />
two pa<strong>rt</strong>-time employees, <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h continues to grow thanks in large pa<strong>rt</strong> to <strong>the</strong> effo<strong>rt</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> nearly th<strong>re</strong>e dozen<br />
Volunteer Staff and Advisory Board members. Some of <strong>the</strong> highlights contained within this 2007 Annual Repo<strong>rt</strong> a<strong>re</strong>:<br />
• With financial suppo<strong>rt</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Rex Foundation and <strong>the</strong> Fund for Wild Natu<strong>re</strong>, <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h continued<br />
to prosecute its first litigation matter – a lawsuit against <strong>the</strong> United States National Park Service for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
mismanagement of <strong>the</strong> st<strong>re</strong>tch of <strong>the</strong> Colorado River that flows through Grand Canyon National Park.<br />
• In our first petition campaign, <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h formed a pa<strong>rt</strong>nership with <strong>the</strong> Gulf Restoration Network and<br />
Save Our Cyp<strong>re</strong>ss against Wal-Ma<strong>rt</strong>, Lowes and Home Depot to petition <strong>the</strong> companies to cease purchasing<br />
and selling mulch from cyp<strong>re</strong>ss fo<strong>re</strong>sts within <strong>the</strong> Gulf Region. After only th<strong>re</strong>e months, Wal-ma<strong>rt</strong> announced<br />
that <strong>the</strong>y will no longer sell cyp<strong>re</strong>ss mulch originating in <strong>the</strong> Gulf <strong>re</strong>gion.<br />
• <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h conducted its first service project. <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h volunteers and Staff collaborated with John<br />
Butler Trio, B<strong>re</strong>tt Dennen, CLIF Bar G<strong>re</strong>en Notes, Surfrider Foundation, and Save <strong>the</strong> Bay, on a beach<br />
cleanup and conce<strong>rt</strong> at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, California.<br />
• <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h successfully “g<strong>re</strong>ened” Jam Cruise for <strong>the</strong> second time in as many years. With <strong>the</strong> suppo<strong>rt</strong> of<br />
festival promoters, <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h pa<strong>rt</strong>ne<strong>re</strong>d with g<strong>re</strong>en businesses, a<strong>rt</strong>ists and ano<strong>the</strong>r nonprofit to <strong>re</strong>duce <strong>the</strong><br />
environmental impact of <strong>the</strong> festival, educate and activate attendees on environmental issues, and completely<br />
offset <strong>the</strong> carbon emissions from <strong>the</strong> ship with t<strong>re</strong>es planted in Haiti and <strong>the</strong> Dominican Republic.<br />
• <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h’s volunteer legal and technical Staff <strong>re</strong>viewed and/or worked on 15 separate, substantive<br />
issues and projects brought to our attention by suppo<strong>rt</strong>ers in <strong>the</strong> music community.<br />
• <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h played a major pa<strong>rt</strong> in <strong>the</strong> environmental programming at 3 festivals in 2007: Bonnaroo, The<br />
Echo Project and <strong>the</strong> No<strong>rt</strong>hwest String Summit.<br />
• As of year end, <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h had 2075 members in all 50 states, an inc<strong>re</strong>ase of 24% over our 2006 membership.<br />
Over 14,000 people a<strong>re</strong> now on our mailing list.<br />
• Nearly 43% of our members and <strong>the</strong> people on our mailing list have voluntee<strong>re</strong>d to assist <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h in<br />
some way – from tabling conce<strong>rt</strong>s and festivals, to providing legal and technical assistance, to grant writing and<br />
helping us with publicity.<br />
• <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h volunteers have donated mo<strong>re</strong> than 10,000 hours suppo<strong>rt</strong>ing our mission and activities.<br />
• <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h had a p<strong>re</strong>sence at 126 conce<strong>rt</strong> dates throughout <strong>the</strong> United States in 2007, and had a full-time<br />
team that traversed <strong>the</strong> country for 17 weeks between May and September.<br />

– a 23% inc<strong>re</strong>ase over 2006!<br />
• The music industry and mo<strong>re</strong>-high profile a<strong>rt</strong>ists continued to embrace <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ea<strong>rt</strong>h in 2007, leading us to<br />
collaborate with, among o<strong>the</strong>rs, Ozzy Osbourne and Ozzfest, <strong>the</strong> Vans Warped Tour, Incubus, The Allman<br />
Bro<strong>the</strong>rs Band, The Dave Mat<strong>the</strong>ws Band, and <strong>the</strong> Indigo Girls.
