basketball hoop. The Aquatic Program is ready to<br />

meet any fitness, leisure and learning needs.<br />

Learn to Swim<br />

<strong>Bowling</strong> <strong>Green</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> offers swim<br />

lessons for all people age six months through<br />

adult and all skill levels from beginning to<br />

advanced swimmers taught by fully certified<br />

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors.<br />

Small Group Lessons<br />

Small Group Lessons have a minimum of 4<br />

participants and a maximum of 6 participants<br />

per class. If class does not meet minimum<br />

number of participants, class will be cancelled. If<br />

class is cancelled due to low enrollment, consider<br />

semi-private or private lessons (additional fees<br />

apply).<br />

Semi-Private Lessons<br />

(by appointment only)<br />

Specialized and intensive swim instruction<br />

for 2 to 3 students 3 years and up. Learn and<br />

improve skills quickly. Please keep in mind<br />

we do not match up children for semi-private<br />

lessons; please assemble your group in advance.<br />

Participants must be at similar swimming<br />

abilities/levels.<br />

Private Lessons (by appointment only)<br />

Private swim lessons are offered to interested<br />

parties who cannot fit group lessons into<br />

their busy schedules or just prefer one-on-one<br />

instruction. Times and dates of lessons are<br />

determined between the assigned instructor and<br />

participant.<br />

Participants may register for all Learn to Swim<br />

classes at the <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Recreation</strong> <strong>Center</strong> or by<br />

calling 419.372.2000.<br />

Class Descriptions<br />

Parent and Child<br />

Designed for children 6 to 36 months of age,<br />

the program builds swimming readiness by<br />

emphasizing fun in water. Swim diapers are<br />

required.<br />

Preschool Aquatics<br />

Designed for children 3 to 4 years of age, the<br />

program builds on readiness in the water<br />

rehearsed in Parent and Child Aquatics without<br />

the assistance of the parent. This level is a<br />

transition between Parent and Child Aquatics and<br />

Level 1. Swim diapers are required.<br />

Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills<br />

Purpose: Help students feel comfortable in the<br />

water.<br />

>> Basic water safety rules<br />

>> Submerging mouth, nose, and eyes<br />

>> Opening eyes under water and picking up<br />

submerged objects<br />

>> Swimming on front and back using arm/leg<br />

Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills<br />

Purpose: Gives students success with<br />

fundamental skills.<br />

>> Submerging entire head<br />

>> Front and back glide<br />

>> Treading water using arm and leg motions<br />

>> Swimming on front and back using arm and<br />

leg motions<br />

Level 3 – Stroke Development<br />

Purpose: Builds on the skills in Level II by<br />

providing additional guided practice.<br />

>> Submerging entire head<br />

>> Front and back glide/Front and back crawl<br />

>> Kneeling or standing dive (shallow dive<br />

progression)<br />

>> Rotary breathing in horizontal position<br />

>> Survival float, back float<br />

>> Butterfly kick and body motion<br />

Level 4 – Stroke Improvement<br />

Purpose: Develops confidence in the strokes<br />

learned and improve other aquatic skills.<br />

>> Dive from stride position or shallow dive<br />

>> Elementary backstroke, breaststroke,<br />

butterfly<br />

>> Throwing assist<br />

>> Feet-first surface dive<br />

>> Front and back crawl<br />

Level 5 Stroke Refinement<br />

Purpose: Provides coordination and refinement<br />

of strokes.<br />

>> Standing dive<br />

>> Open turns on front and back/Front and back<br />

crawl<br />

>> Tuck surface dive and pike surface dive<br />

>> Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn<br />

>> Elementary backstroke, butterfly,<br />

breaststroke and sidestroke<br />

>> Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn<br />
