<strong>Student</strong> Development<br />
and Leadership<br />
The <strong>Student</strong> Development and Leadership Program<br />
(SDL) provides training that includes a philosophical<br />
orientation to the field of leadership and a series<br />
of workshops. SDL workshops offer hands-on<br />
educational experience and prepare individuals for<br />
lifelong career and personal growth. Participants<br />
develop an appreciation for engaged leadership<br />
while inspiring active and healthy lifestyles.<br />
In order to promote student learning, all SDL<br />
sessions are grounded in theory. The two anchors<br />
for theoretical support are Kouzes & Posner’s Five<br />
Practices of Exemplary Leadership and the BGSU<br />
Orientation and First Year Program’s Pillars for<br />
<strong>Student</strong> Success. All facilitators are mindful of these<br />
connections when creating programs.<br />

Training Focus: Learning Contracts and<br />
Communication<br />
Overview:<br />
This session is an opportunity for student<br />
supervisors to engage in a conversation with the<br />
Graduate Assistant or professional staff in their<br />
respective area about goals and expectations for<br />
the upcoming year. After learning about learning<br />
contracts (esp. why to have them, what they are,<br />
who they benefit, and how to make them), student<br />
supervisors and graduate assistants create a<br />
learning contract with their supervisor.<br />

Objectives:<br />
• Participants develop goals and learning<br />

inform supervisors of <strong>Student</strong> Supervisors’<br />
intended learning outcomes for the year.<br />

Training Focus: Discipline and Evaluations<br />
Overview:<br />
This session offers an opportunity to discuss<br />
best practices for student employee discipline.<br />
Participants have the opportunity to engage<br />
in simulated disciplinary hearings and<br />
conversations. In this session, time is allotted<br />
to discuss ways that have worked and/or been<br />
unsuccessful to deal with discipline issues across<br />
the areas.<br />

Objectives:<br />
• Participants engage in conversations with their<br />
peers to identify best practices for disciplining<br />

conversations and hearings to promote<br />
confidence in dealing with those issues.<br />
• Participants can articulate methods they can<br />
use in their areas for disciplinary action.<br />

Overview:<br />
This session is an opportunity to introduce the<br />
new hiring model that <strong>Recreation</strong> and Wellness<br />

will be adopting. Participants engage in activities<br />
simulating the hiring process and conversations<br />
regarding why and how the new model is being<br />
implemented. During the session, participants<br />
create a hiring rubric to be used during the hiring<br />
process.<br />

“Emphasizing the ‘I’ in Finals”<br />
Overview:<br />
This session utilizes the skills of Counseling<br />
<strong>Center</strong> employees (or others) to engage in a<br />
conversation about self-care and encouraging<br />
holistic wellness for employees. Participants<br />
learn and discuss strategies to manage time,<br />
reduce stress, and notice stress in employees.<br />

• Participants can articulate strategies to reduce<br />

for assistance for those who need it.
