ABOUT THE RURAL HEALTH ACADEMIC CENTRE<br />
Welcome to the <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Academic Centre (RHAC), The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Melbourne</strong>’s centre<br />
<strong>of</strong> teaching, research and community development in rural health.<br />
The <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Academic Centre manages the <strong>University</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Health</strong> and<br />
the <strong>Rural</strong> Clinical <strong>School</strong> which are two programs funded by the Commonwealth Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> and Ageing. The RHAC aims to increase the number <strong>of</strong> practitioners working in<br />
rural settings by providing education and training. Through close relationships with local<br />
hospitals and other rural health services, the RHAC shares resources and staff to enable an<br />
integrated approach to rural health education and training in Victorian rural areas.<br />
The RHAC has three campuses – Ballarat, Shepparton and Wangaratta - with multi-purpose<br />
facilities comprising student residential accommodation, <strong>of</strong>fice and administration areas as<br />
well as conference rooms, tutorial rooms, library, computers, a clinical skills laboratory and<br />
state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art audiovisual technology. New clinical training locations are in Benalla, Echuca<br />
and Yarrawonga.<br />
About the <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />
Academic Centre<br />
The <strong>Rural</strong> Clinical <strong>School</strong> (RCS) established under an initiative <strong>of</strong> the Commonwealth<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> and Ageing, admitted its first medical students in July 2002. Since<br />
July 2004, the RCS has trained 25% <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Melbourne</strong> Australian medical students<br />
undertaking their clinical years. The RCS works closely with hospitals <strong>of</strong> Ballarat <strong>Health</strong>,<br />
Bendigo <strong>Health</strong>, Benalla & District Memorial Hospital, Echuca Regional <strong>Health</strong>, Goulburn<br />
Valley <strong>Health</strong>, Northeast <strong>Health</strong> Wangaratta, Yarrawonga District <strong>Health</strong> Service and general<br />
practices in the region.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Health</strong> program is also funded by the<br />
Commonwealth Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> and Ageing. Its mission is to improve the health<br />
and well being <strong>of</strong> rural and indigenous communities through quality, collaborative,<br />
multidisciplinary, culturally sensitive health education and research. The program includes a<br />
three-week <strong>Rural</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Module, which is a compulsory unit for medical students, and other<br />
placements for dental, physiotherapy, nursing and allied health students. The RHAC also<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers postgraduate training and conducts research.<br />
