Major Taylor <strong>Bicycling</strong> <strong>Club</strong> of MN is<br />
proud to present the American<br />
Release of …“Major Taylor in<br />
Australia”. Jim Fitzpatrick, author of<br />
"Major Taylor in Australia" (Star Hill<br />
Studio, 2011), will join us for a retelling<br />
of the greatest American<br />
athletic story ever forgotten.<br />
Major Taylor in Australia, the basis<br />
for the award-winning Tracks of<br />
Glory, is the first significant new work<br />
on Major Taylor since Andrew<br />
Ritchie’s original biography in 1988.<br />
Major Taylor, the black American<br />
cyclist and 1899 World Sprint<br />
Champion, was the highest paid and<br />
most famous athlete in what was then<br />
the world’s most popular and lucrative<br />
sport. Spectators packed stadiums in<br />
North America, Europe, and<br />
Australasia to watch him race. In the<br />
United States, however, his white<br />
rivals’ racial bigotry, hatred, threats,<br />
and dangerous and dirty riding tactics<br />
became intolerable. In Australia, in<br />
1904, Taylor faced his American arch<br />
enemy, and hostilities came to a head.<br />
Come join us for evening with Jim<br />
Fitzpatrick as he walks us through this<br />
great period in Major Taylor’s life. We<br />
will discuss his life’s accomplishments,<br />
innovative training, spiritual<br />
commitment, his great challenges<br />
and why he is still relevant in 2011.<br />
He has been rediscovered as an<br />
American hero in the “new golden<br />
age of cycling”.<br />
