Tel: +33 1 49 54 46 46. Rooms from €220. www.lutetia-paris.com On December 9, 1970, a 16-year-old Jean-Luc Jean arrived for his first day of work at the four-star Hôtel Lutetia on Paris’s Left Bank. Today, after stints in the kitchens and as a doorman, he’s worked his way up to head concierge, a position in which he’s expected to take care of the hotel’s most important guests, and be an expert on everything from Paris’s spidery Metro to stain removal. A concierge always has a well-guarded address book. How many phone numbers does yours contain? I’m not sure really. It has everyone from top politicians and cooks at Michelinstarred restaurants to car mechanics and dentists who work 24-7. I used to have a classic address book in which I wrote down everything with a pen, but today I have an electronic one. I make a backup of it at home every day since losing all that information would be catastrophic. Whose number wouldn’t you want to lose? It belongs to a French politician. I can’t name him of course, but he’s one of the really big fish, or was anyway. He’s old now and doesn’t work anymore, but for many years he would come here every Tuesday and stay for a night or two, though not necessarily on business. His number is invaluable if someone leaves their computer behind in a cab. There’s no point just calling the police – they need a push from above to make sure it is returned immediately. His number fixes things like that. What’s the strangest request you have had? It would be from a regular who called from his home in California for a tarte tatin. I said no problem, because we have the best bakery in Paris just around the corner: Poîlane [8 Rue Cherche-Midi. www.poilane.com]. It turned out he needed 84 single portions. They were baked and shipped to California that very day. What’s the difference between a good concierge and a bad one? A good concierge is discreet, sees everything – and I mean everything – but never breathes a word about it. Ever. What do you like most about your job?
