couscous house in the Marais. The classic
brasserie decor – dark wood paneling,
mustard-yellow walls and brass
fittings – is slightly outdated but charming

It’s not just the paintings on the walls
that give this restaurant the air of a
salon. This is where Milan’s art cognoscenti
have dined for almost a century
even if the food – interpretations of
Italian classics such as veal ragout and
chicken and beef scaloppini – arguably
plays second fiddle to the conversation.
Legend has it Italy’s oldest literary prize,
the Premio Bagutta, was founded here
after novelist Riccardo Bacchelli and
his cronies meted out a fine to a late arrival
who paid up on condition that the
money be used to reward a literary work
of their choosing.
