Child Development and Suggested <strong>Parenting</strong> Schedules<br />

DESIGNING A SCHEDULE FOR BIRTH TO 2 YEARS<br />

Schedules 1 and 2 are <strong>for</strong><br />

when:<br />

• The child will spend less<br />

time with one parent<br />

because of work<br />

schedules, living<br />

arrangements, or great<br />

distance between homes,<br />

or<br />

• The child has not<br />

developed a bond with a<br />

parent, or<br />

• A parent has limited<br />

parenting skills, or<br />

• The child previously spent<br />

the most time with one<br />

parent.<br />

Schedule 1: Three periods of three to five hours<br />

spaced throughout each week (See a sample schedule<br />

on page 14.)<br />

Comment: Frequent contact helps the child bond with<br />

each parent, something that is important <strong>for</strong> the<br />

child’s healthy development.<br />

Schedule 2: Two periods of four to six hours spaced<br />

throughout each week (See a sample schedule on<br />

page 14.)<br />

Comment: This schedule is more helpful than<br />

Schedule 1 when the parents’ work schedules, living<br />

situations or levels of conflict with each other make<br />

frequent exchanges difficult. Because this schedule<br />

has only two visits each week, bonding between the<br />

parent and child may take a little more time, and the<br />

child may have difficulty going from one parent to the<br />

other.<br />

Vacation: Vacations that are much different from the<br />

regular parenting time schedule are not recommended<br />

unless the parents agree.<br />

Holidays: <strong>Parents</strong> should consider dividing holidays<br />

or special occasions in time blocks similar to their<br />

regular parenting time. The “Holidays, Vacation, and<br />

School Breaks” section on page 53 offers ideas of<br />

what to consider and how to divide holidays and other<br />

special days.<br />
