Child Development and Suggested <strong>Parenting</strong> Schedules<br />

<strong>Parents</strong> may start with<br />

Schedule 11 when:<br />

• Both parents have a bond<br />

with the child, or<br />

• <strong>Parenting</strong> skills of each<br />

parent are adequate, but<br />

one parent has less<br />

available time than the<br />

other to devote to the<br />

child, or<br />

• <strong>Parents</strong> have used<br />

Schedules 9 and 10<br />

<strong>for</strong> some time.<br />

Schedule 11: Four consecutive overnights during<br />

Week 1 and one overnight during Week 2. (See a<br />

sample schedule on page 19.)<br />

Vacation: Each year, each parent can take from two to<br />

four weeks of vacation time with the child. Two twoweek<br />

periods may be best <strong>for</strong> younger children. If a<br />

four-week vacation period is used and the child is in<br />

town, the child should have the opportunity to be with<br />

the non-vacationing parent <strong>for</strong> one weekend during the<br />

vacation period. At least 30 days be<strong>for</strong>e the planned<br />

vacation, each parent must give the other parent written<br />

notice of the travel dates. At least 3 days be<strong>for</strong>e travel,<br />

each parent must give detailed in<strong>for</strong>mation to the other<br />

parent, including the places they will be going and how<br />

to reach the child or the parent during the vacation.<br />

Holidays: <strong>Parents</strong> may alternate, share or split the<br />

holidays <strong>for</strong> children of this age. The “Holidays,<br />

Vacations, and School Breaks” section on page 53<br />

offers ideas of what to consider and how to divide<br />

holidays and other special days.<br />
