Child Development and Suggested <strong>Parenting</strong> Schedules<br />

In Week 2, the child spends the weekend with Parent<br />

B. (See the sample schedule on page 21.)<br />

Comment: This schedule provides each parent with<br />

alternating full weekends with and without the<br />

children. The children are away from each parent<br />

during alternate weeks <strong>for</strong> five days.<br />

Schedule 14: Alternating seven-day periods with or<br />

without mid-week time. Mid-week time may add more<br />

scheduling challenges. (See a sample schedule on page<br />

22.)<br />

Vacation: Each year, each parent can take from to<br />

two to four weeks of vacation time with the child. Two<br />

two-week periods may be best <strong>for</strong> younger children. If<br />

a four-week vacation period is used and the child is in<br />

town, the child should have the opportunity to be with<br />

the non-vacationing parent <strong>for</strong> one weekend during the<br />

vacation period. At least 30 days be<strong>for</strong>e the planned<br />

vacation, each parent must give the other parent<br />

written notice of the travel dates. At least 3 days be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

travel, each parent must give detailed in<strong>for</strong>mation to<br />

the other parent, including the places they will be<br />

going and how to reach the child or the parent during<br />

the vacation. Keep in mind your teen’s work schedules<br />

and extracurricular activities.<br />

Holidays: <strong>Parents</strong> may alternate, share or split the<br />

holidays <strong>for</strong> children of this age. The “Holidays,<br />

Vacations, and School Breaks” section on page 53<br />

offers some ideas of what to think about and how to<br />

divide holidays and other special days.<br />
