Child Development and Suggested <strong>Parenting</strong> Schedules<br />

DESIGNING A SCHEDULE FOR 2 TO 3 YEARS<br />

Schedules 3 and 4 are <strong>for</strong><br />

when:<br />

• The child will spend less<br />

time with one parent<br />

because of work<br />

schedules, living<br />

arrangements, or great<br />

distance between homes,<br />

or<br />

• The child has not<br />

developed a bond with a<br />

parent, or<br />

• A parent has limited<br />

parenting skills, or<br />

• The child previously<br />

spent most of his or her<br />

time with one parent.<br />

Schedule 3: Two periods of three to five hours and<br />

one period of eight hours spaced throughout each<br />

week. (See a sample schedule on page 14.)<br />

Schedule 3 Vacation: Vacations that are much<br />

different from the regular parenting time schedule<br />

are not recommended unless the parents agree.<br />

Schedule 4: Two periods of three to six hours and<br />

one overnight each week (See a sample schedule on<br />

page 15.)<br />

Schedule 4 Vacation: <strong>Parents</strong> may have two oneweek<br />

periods separated by at least four weeks. At<br />

least 30 days be<strong>for</strong>e the planned vacation, each<br />

parent must give the other parent written notice of<br />

the travel dates. At least 3 days be<strong>for</strong>e travel, each<br />

parent must give detailed in<strong>for</strong>mation to the other<br />

parent, including the places they will be going and<br />

how to reach the child or the parent during the<br />

vacation.<br />

Holidays: <strong>Parents</strong> should consider dividing holidays<br />

or special occasions in time blocks similar to their<br />

regular parenting time. The “Holidays, Vacation,<br />

and School Breaks” section on page 53 offers ideas<br />

of what to consider and how to divide holidays and<br />

other special days.<br />
