Child Development and Suggested <strong>Parenting</strong> Schedules<br />
Schedules 7 and 8 include<br />
overnights. Schedules 7 and 8<br />
are <strong>for</strong> parents who:<br />
• Have cared <strong>for</strong> the child<br />
about equally, or<br />
• Both know how to care<br />
<strong>for</strong> the child overnight, or<br />
• Live close enough to each<br />
other that the child will<br />
not have long car trips<br />
between the homes, or<br />
• Can communicate and<br />
cooperate with each other<br />
about the child’s care<br />
and well-being, or<br />
• Have been successfully<br />
using schedule 5 <strong>for</strong> some<br />
time.<br />

Schedule 7: One period of three to six hours and two<br />
consecutive overnights each week. (See a sample<br />
schedule on page 17.)<br />
Schedule 8: Two days with one parent (including<br />
overnights) followed by three days with the other parent<br />
(including overnights) with this schedule continuing<br />
over time. This schedule requires both parents to live<br />
near enough to one another, manage conflicts away<br />
from their child and communicate well about their<br />
child. This schedule also may be appropriate when there<br />
is an older child who spends considerable time with<br />
both parents. (See a sample schedule on page 17.)<br />
Vacation: <strong>Parents</strong> may have two one-week periods<br />
separated by at least four weeks. At least 30 days be<strong>for</strong>e<br />
the planned vacation, each parent must give the other<br />
parent written notice of the travel dates. At least 3 days<br />
be<strong>for</strong>e travel, each parent must give detailed<br />
in<strong>for</strong>mation to the other parent, including the places<br />
they will be going and how to reach the child or the<br />
parent during the vacation.<br />
Holidays: <strong>Parents</strong> should consider dividing holidays or<br />
special occasions in time blocks similar to their regular<br />
parenting time. The “Holidays, Vacation, and School<br />
Breaks” section on page 53 offers ideas of what to<br />
consider and how to divide holidays and other special<br />
days.<br />
