Thomas Pinkney Bryan b: 9 Oct 1861
• Information: 1810, Bedford County, Tennessee. John Neely Bryan was born to James
and Elizabeth (Neely) Bryan in Bedford County Tennessee. He attended the
Fayetteville Military Academy located at Fayetteville in the adjoining County of
Lincoln. He was admitted to the Tennessee Bar upon complotting his education. In
1833 John headed for Arkansas, a young attorney in pursuit of the family endeavor of
trading furs with Native Americans. James and a fur-trading partner laid out the town
of Van Buren Arkansas. He visited Texas in 1839, returned to Arkansas to settle
affairs there in the spring of 1840, and then returned to Texas in 1841. John was the
prime mover in establishment of the City of Dallas while living on the east bank of the
Trinity River, and instrumental in organizing the new county of Dallas 1in 1846. When
Dallas was made the County Seat in 1850, John Neely Bryan donated land to build the
new Courthouse.
