• Information: 1582, Buckland Monachorum, , Devonshire, England. Francis was<br />
certified as Ship Captain and Master in Rotterdam by Capt. Nicholas Washington II<br />
June 14, 1609. He hired out to the Washington family and served the East India Trade.<br />
He did not marry in Rotterdam or England thereto, he may have married in India. He<br />
was master of one of the ships that landed at Masulipatam India in 1611.<br />

- His parents married July 2, 1573 at Uffculme Devonshire England. William was<br />
certified as Master and Ship Captain by Capt. William Barker in London in May 1614.<br />

We have accessed a considerable number of resources attempting to prove this man<br />
and his family. We assumed the extant data circulated about this <strong>Bryan</strong> family to be<br />
correct, and followed it accordingly. Then we began finding bits and pieces of<br />
information that suggested the accepted historical pedigree was suspect. We then<br />
turned our attention to locate sound proofs of the family the <strong>Bryan</strong> family of<br />
Cheddington in Buckinghamshire. We followed Sir Francis <strong>Bryan</strong> throughout his<br />
lifetime and there is tons of extant data in England and Ireland whereas there is no<br />
doubt about him, or his second wife. Serious doubt exists however about Sir Francis<br />
<strong>Bryan</strong> leaving descendants by his second wife, Lady Joan Fitzgerald. We turned to<br />
the latest published book that proves Armorial Bearings of the United Kingdom's<br />
antique heraldry, and the trusted Burkes publication proved that Sir William Smith that<br />
went to Ireland in service to his country did in fact exist, and he married Bridget<br />
Fleetwood.<br />
Sir William Smith was born circa 1550, and he was the son of George Smith and his<br />
wife, Isabella. He married Bridget Fleetwood, daughter of Thomas Fleetwood in<br />
1590. Sir William died in 1626; however, he was a peer of Sir Francis <strong>Bryan</strong> Jr., born<br />
1550; therefore, ruling out any possibility that he could have married his peer's<br />
